For Shaurya Bansal, Olympiad preparation began before he had a clear idea of where it would lead. A friend introduced him to junior science Olympiads in Class 8, and after missing the registration that year, he returned with a more serious approach. His progress through junior science competitions eventually led him towards NSEB and a deeper interest in biology.
Now in Class 10, Shaurya is balancing school with Olympiad preparation while also exploring interests in interdisciplinary research and foreign universities. His experience offers practical insights into starting NSEB preparation, choosing resources, managing school, and staying consistent.
Shaurya's interest in Olympiads developed gradually. His first exposure came through a friend in Class 8, which introduced him to the idea of preparing for junior science competitions. After missing the registration that year, he returned the following year with a more focused approach.
"Sir like maine 8th class ke andar first time mere ek friend tha. Usne mujhe introduce karvaya bachpan se fifth and all mein to SO Olympiads are common. Main bhi itna client nahi tha academic site ka. Hum but ek mein like someone introduced me MSC JS and Junior Science ho raha hai to uski wajah se mujhe idea laga ki kaise prepare karte hain. Jab tak end hone wali thi, to unfortunately could I could not register that year but next year I worked sincerely and phir maine ninth mein NSEJS diya."
That first serious attempt became an important step in Shaurya's journey. He qualified for NSEJS and later moved towards IJSO, giving him greater exposure to science beyond the regular school curriculum. His existing interest in biology also made NSEB a natural direction.
After gaining experience through junior science competitions, Shaurya began exploring biology more deeply. His family background also gave him some exposure to the subject, but he developed his own way of approaching it by visualising concepts rather than treating biology as something to memorise.
"Bachpan se aisa lagta tha ki biology ko ratna nahi chahiye, visualize karna chahiye aur wo mujhe platform NSEB ke through mila. Mera interest bhi badha hai phir PW mein bahut support dikha, phir Olympiad wala ke liye poori team rahi, to is karan mujhe phir introduce mila kaise prepare karna chahiye and all."
This approach helped him see biology as a subject that required understanding and application. His NSEB preparation consequently went beyond simply covering school-level material and involved progressively deeper study.
As Shaurya moved towards NSEB, he joined PW's Olympiad-focused learning environment. He credits the batches and faculty support with helping him build his preparation from the basics, while the PDC environment gave him opportunities to clarify doubts and interact with peers preparing for the same competition.
"PW ke jo batches the, aapne aur sir ne A to Z matlab basic se uthaya hai hum logon ko. Hum logon ko wo capable banaya."
Shaurya also highlighted the role of the PDC in handling doubts accumulated throughout his preparation.
"Very much because the cumulative doubts we have in check from Jan to till here. You have dedicated so much, the faculties are so much dedicated to solve that and bahut yahan pe interaction achha ho paya compare to I think peer group is helping. Really very one to one problem solving. Environment bhi hai."
The support therefore worked alongside his own effort rather than replacing it. The combination of structured learning, doubt solving, peer interaction and regular practice helped him continue with a demanding Olympiad syllabus while still being in school.
With the basics in place, Shaurya followed a layered approach to resources. He emphasised completing the material provided in the Olympiad batch first and then using additional resources to increase the level of preparation.
"Aapko sabse pehle wo notes kar lena hai achhe se. Jo bhi teacher keh raha hai by heart usko follow karna hai. After that, if you want to push up Campbell, aapne NCERT aap kar hi lete hain. Sir karwa hi dete hain. To aap NCERT kariye. Uske liye aap koi reference book jaise NCERT fingertips aati hai, main wo usko follow karta hoon."
For Shaurya, Campbell Biology was an important reference after covering the foundational material. However, he also stressed that repeatedly revising what had already been studied was more important than continuously adding resources.
"NSEB ke liye Campbell is more than enough. NSEB first level ke liye jisne Campbell kar liya aur revise, revise is most important."
This approach kept his preparation focused rather than allowing it to become overloaded with multiple books and sources.
Balancing school and Olympiad preparation is a common concern for students at this stage. Shaurya's method is to dedicate a short, focused period to school-specific preparation when exams approach and then return to Olympiad studies.
"It is easily manageable. Like, I have done in this way only. Like if my first terms are there, I have given two-three days for it. Perfectly done. And then after I restarted with Olympiad."
He explained that his stronger STEM preparation through Olympiad studies also supported his school subjects. For other school subjects, he planned his time separately rather than allowing them to disrupt his broader preparation.
This strategy allowed him to continue Olympiad preparation while remaining attentive to school examinations, instead of treating the two as completely separate academic tracks.
For students starting their own Olympiad journey, Shaurya places consistency and sustained effort above constantly searching for new strategies or resources.
His preparation also reflects the value of moving through resources progressively first establishing the basics, then strengthening concepts with additional material and revisiting them through revision and practice.
At the same time, Shaurya's journey shows that Olympiad preparation can be pursued alongside school if students plan their time carefully. His experience from Class 8 onwards demonstrates how an initial introduction to Olympiads can gradually develop into a focused academic interest.
Shaurya is currently in Class 10 and has broader academic ambitions beyond NSEB. He is interested in pursuing higher education abroad and exploring interdisciplinary areas involving biology, research, and technology.
His Olympiad journey has already helped him look at biology beyond conventional textbook learning. With continued preparation, he hopes to take this interest further while building a strong academic profile.
Shaurya Bansal's story is a reminder that Olympiad preparation does not have to begin with complete clarity. It can start with curiosity, develop through consistent effort, and become more focused with the right guidance and resources. For younger aspirants, his approach of building the basics, using resources selectively, revising repeatedly, and managing school with a clear plan offers a practical way to approach NSEB preparation.
