The Ministry of Education has announced that Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Computational Thinking (CT) will be introduced in schools from Class 3, starting in the 2026–27 academic year. This move is aimed at preparing students for the future and making AI a foundational skill. Sanjay Kumar, Secretary of the Department of School Education and Literacy (DoSE&L), said AI education will be linked to the theme “The World Around Us.”
The curriculum is being developed under the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF SE) 2023 and is aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The department is coordinating with CBSE, NCERT, Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS), Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS), as well as state and UT education bodies.
A stakeholder consultation was recently held, bringing together experts and institutional representatives to plan the integration of AI and CT in schools. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has set up an expert committee led by Professor Karthik Raman of IIT Madras to guide the curriculum development.
Ethics and Inclusion Officials emphasized that the curriculum will teach not only technical skills but also ethical and social awareness. By introducing AI from an early age, the initiative aims to develop students who can use technology responsibly to address real-world challenges. Sanjay Kumar highlighted that the curriculum must remain broad-based, inclusive, and adaptable to India’s specific educational needs. Teacher Training and Curriculum Implementation Teachers are central to the success of this program.
Training will be provided through NISHTHA and other national programs, using video-based resources and handbooks developed by NCERT. A coordination committee between NCERT and CBSE will ensure smooth integration, quality control, and a structured rollout of AI and CT modules. The introduction of AI and Computational Thinking from Grade 3 marks a major step in India’s education reform, aiming to equip every child with both cognitive and ethical skills to thrive in a digital world.
