Is It Compulsory to Follow the Question Paper Order?

No, it is not compulsory. According to CBSE’s official guidance, students may change the sequence of questions while attempting the paper. You are free to start with any question you feel confident about.

The board does not deduct marks simply because you changed the order.

What CBSE Expects If You Change the Sequence

If you choose to attempt questions out of order, you must ensure your answer sheet is clear and organized.

The most important rule is: Always write the correct question number clearly before attempting the answer.

This helps the examiner easily identify which question you are answering. If question numbers are missing, incorrect, or unclear, it may create confusion during evaluation.

Your answer sheet should also be neat, properly spaced, and free from unnecessary overwriting or scribbling. 

What If You Attempt a Question Twice?

Sometimes students accidentally answer the same question twice.

In such cases, CBSE guidance clearly states: You must clearly cross out the answer that you do not want to be evaluated.

If you do not cancel one attempt properly, it can create confusion. Examiners may not guess which one you want checked. Always clearly indicate your final answer.
