What Are Latitudes?

  • Equator

  • Parallels of Latitude

Lines of latitude run parallel to the Equator.

Two important examples are:

What Are Longitudes?

Longitudes are imaginary lines running from the North Pole to the South Pole. They measure how far east or west a place lies from the Prime Meridian.

The Prime Meridian passes through Greenwich, England, and is located at 0° longitude. It serves as the reference point from which longitude is measured eastward or westward.

For example:

  • New York is approximately 74°W longitude.

  • Tokyo is approximately 140°E longitude.

How Does Longitude Affect Local Time?

Earth's rotation means that different places experience day and night at different times. Because of this, local time is connected with longitude. Places located along the same longitude have the same local time. As longitude changes eastward or westward, local time also changes. This relationship between longitude and time forms the basis for dividing Earth into different time zones.

How Do Time Zones Work?

Earth is divided into 24 time zones, with each covering approximately 15° of longitude. Each time zone represents a difference of one hour.

For example, if it is:

  • 12 noon at Greenwich (0°)

  • It is 1 pm at 15°E

  • It is 11 am at 15°W

This happens because locations east and west of Greenwich experience time differently as Earth rotates.

What Is Indian Standard Time?

Countries may adopt one standard time instead of using separate local times at every longitude.

Indian Standard Time (IST) is 5.5 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). This standard provides a common time for the country.

What Happens at the International Date Line?

The International Date Line is an imaginary line located around 180° longitude. Crossing it changes the calendar date by one day.

The direction of travel determines whether a day is added or subtracted:

  • Crossing eastward: Subtract one day.

  • Crossing westward: Add one day.
