CBSE Class 8 English Poorvi Notes Chapter 10 The Cherry Tree Summary

The story The Cherry Tree by Ruskin Bond is about a young boy named Rakesh and his deep bond with nature. When Rakesh is six years old, he buys cherries from the Mussoorie bazaar and plants one cherry seed in the garden at his grandfather’s suggestion. At first, Rakesh forgets about the seed, but with the coming of spring, a small plant appears. Both Rakesh and his grandfather are happy to see the cherry tree growing.

The tree faces many difficulties. It is eaten by a goat, cut by a woman’s scythe, and bent under heavy snow. Despite these hardships, the tree does not die. It grows back again and again, showing great strength and determination. As the cherry tree grows, Rakesh also grows up, becoming stronger and more mature.

Over the years, the tree blossoms with pink flowers and later bears cherries. Birds, bees, and insects visit the tree, making it full of life. Rakesh and his grandfather spend peaceful moments under its shade, enjoying nature together. In the end, Rakesh realises that the cherry tree is special because they planted it themselves. The story beautifully shows the themes of love for nature, patience, growth, and the joy of nurturing life.
