These notes explain how Major Somnath Sharma and his company defended Srinagar during the Battle of Badgam through extraordinary courage, leadership, and determination.
Introduction:
This chapter honours Major Somnath Sharma, the first Param Vir Chakra (PVC) awardee of India. It tells how he and his men defended Srinagar in 1947 with great courage and duty. His life shows love for the nation, leadership, and sacrifice.
Summary:
After Independence, armed groups trained and supported from across the border entered Kashmir to capture important places, including Srinagar airfield.
The Indian Army was airlifted to Srinagar on 27 October 1947. D Company, 4 Kumaon, led by Major Somnath Sharma, flew in on 31 October. Though his left hand was in plaster, he chose to go with his men.
On 3 November 1947, D Company (about 90 soldiers) was patrolling near Badgam, close to the airfield. They were suddenly attacked by nearly 500 infiltrators. Major Somnath first faced one attack, then saw a bigger attack from another side.
He asked for air strikes and laid around panels to guide aircraft. He kept moving under fire, directing men, loading magazines, and encouraging them to hold their position.
Ammunition ran low. When told to withdraw, he sent his famous message: “I shall not withdraw an inch... I will fight to the last man and the last round.” Soon after, a mortar shell hit his position and he was martyred.
His men held on for hours, delaying the enemy till reinforcements arrived. The enemy suffered heavy losses, and Srinagar was saved. Major Somnath Sharma was awarded the Param Vir Chakra (posthumously).
