Summary

The Case of the Fifth Word is a detective story about a very intelligent boy named Encyclopedia Brown, who lives in Idaville, USA. His father, Chief Brown, is the Chief of Police. Although Encyclopedia is only an eighth-grade student, he often helps his father solve difficult cases.

One evening at the dinner table, Chief Brown looks worried. He tells his family about Tim Nolan, a man who has just died. Nolan was suspected in a jewellery robbery that happened five years ago at the Diamond Mart. Along with his friend Daniel Davenport, Nolan was believed to have stolen expensive jewellery, but there was no proof. The jewellery was never found, and Davenport disappeared after the robbery.

Before his death, Nolan suffered a stroke and left behind a will, giving all his property, including a palm-tree nursery, to Davenport. Clipped to the will was a calendar sheet with four strange words written on it: Nom, Utes, Sweden, Hurts. Chief Brown finds this suspicious but cannot understand its meaning.

Encyclopedia carefully thinks about the words. He realises that the words are a code. They represent the days of the week—Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday—with the word "day" removed. The fifth day, Friday, is missing, and its word is Fir.

Encyclopedia concludes that the jewellery must be hidden under the fir tree in Nolan's nursery. Later, the police find the stolen jewellery inside a twenty-gallon jug buried under the young fir tree, proving that Encyclopedia was right.

The story highlights intelligence, observation, and logical thinking, showing how a young boy solves a mystery that even the police could not.
