Question:1 Read the extract given below and answer the questions that follow:
“The expected call came within a few days. Mrs. Pumphrey was distraught. Tricki would eat nothing. Refused even his favourite dishes, and besides, he had bouts of vomiting. He spent all his time lying on a rug, panting. Didn't want to go for walks, didn't want to do anything.
I had made my plans in advance. The only way was to get Tricki out of the house for a period. I suggested that he be hospitalised for about a fortnight to be kept under observation.” (A Triumph of Surgery)
Answer: After a few days, the expected call finally came. Mrs. Pumphrey was very anxious as Tricki had completely lost his appetite. He even refused to eat the dishes he loved the most and was vomiting repeatedly. He remained lying on a mat most of the time, breathing heavily and showing no interest in exercise or daily activities. Dr. Herriot had already planned the treatment. He believed that Tricki needed to stay away from the unhealthy environment of the house, so he recommended admitting him to the hospital for around two weeks for proper monitoring and care.
Question 2. Why was Mr. Herriot shocked at Tricki's appearance?
Ans: Mr. Herriot was surprised and concerned when he saw Tricki because the dog had become extremely fat and unhealthy. His body looked swollen like a stuffed sausage with tiny legs. His eyes appeared red and watery, and his tongue hung out of his mouth. Seeing Tricki’s poor condition made Mr. Herriot realise that the dog was seriously overfed and needed immediate care.
Question 3. How did Mrs. Pumphrey treat Tricki?
Ans: Mrs. Pumphrey loved Tricki deeply and treated him like a family member. Being wealthy, she gave him excessive care, rich food, and many tasty treats such as chocolates, cream cakes, and sweets. She also fed him supplements like malt and cod-liver oil. She could never refuse Tricki anything he wanted. Her overprotective nature and constant pampering eventually spoiled Tricki’s health and made him inactive and ill.
Question 4. What was Mr. Herriot's strict advice? Did Mrs. Pumphrey agree to his advice? (Answer the following questions in 40-50 words)
Ans: Mr. Herriot strongly advised Mrs. Pumphrey to stop feeding Tricki rich and fatty food and to make him exercise regularly. He warned that overfeeding would damage the dog’s health. However, Mrs. Pumphrey failed to follow his instructions properly and continued giving Tricki extra food and treats out of affection.
Question 5. Dr. Herriot knew his patients as well as their owners really well. Discuss.
Ans: Dr. Herriot clearly understood both Tricki’s illness and Mrs. Pumphrey’s behaviour. He realised that Tricki’s poor health was caused by too much food and lack of exercise due to his owner’s excessive love. At the hospital, he controlled Tricki’s diet, avoided giving him extra treats, and allowed him to play and exercise with other dogs. As a result, Tricki soon became active and healthy again. This shows that Dr. Herriot understood animals and their owners very well.
Question 6. Why was it important for Mrs. Pumphrey to be a little cruel in order to be kind towards Tricki?
Ans: Tricki had developed unhealthy habits because of excessive pampering. He loved eating rich food all the time and avoided physical activity, which made him seriously ill. To improve his health, Mrs. Pumphrey needed to act strictly by reducing his food intake and encouraging regular exercise. Though this seemed harsh, it was necessary for Tricki’s recovery and overall well-being.
