Question 1: What ‘experiment’ did Maxwell think Camusfearna would be suitable for?

Answer: Maxwell wanted to try keeping an otter as a domestic pet instead of the usual pets like dogs or cats. After his visit to Southern Iraq, he became very interested in otters. Since Camusfearna was located near water, he believed it would be the ideal place to carry out this unusual experiment successfully.

Question 2: Why does he go to Basra? How long does he wait there, and why?

Answer: Maxwell went to Basra to collect his letters from the Consulate-General. However, his mail had not arrived, so he had to stay there for five days. During this time, he tried contacting England through a telegram and a telephone call, but several delays and communication problems prevented him from getting any quick response.

Question 3: How does he get the otter? Does he like it? Pick out the words that tell you this.

Answer: After receiving his mail, Maxwell returned to his room and found two Arabs carrying a bag with something moving inside it. Along with the bag, they gave him a message from his friend saying that he had sent an otter for him. Maxwell was extremely pleased to receive it. The words “otter fixation” clearly show his deep liking and fascination for otters.

Question 4: Why was the otter named ‘Maxwell’s otter’?

Answer: The otter belonged to a rare species that was scientifically called “Lutrogale Perspicillata Maxwelli.” Since Maxwell had kept and studied it, the otter became popularly known as “Maxwell’s otter.”

Question 5:Tick the right answer. In the beginning, the otter was • aloof and indifferent • friendly • hostile

Answer: In the beginning, the otter was distant and uninterested.

Question 6: What happened when Maxwell took Mijbil to the bathroom? What did it do two days after that?

Answer: When Maxwell first took Mijbil into the bathroom, the otter became very excited and enjoyed playing in the water. It jumped, rolled, and moved around happily in the bathtub for a long time. Two days later, Mijbil went to the bathroom by himself and tried to open the tap with his paws. Soon, he managed to make the water flow, showing how intelligent and playful he was.

Oral Comprehension Check (पृष्ठ 108-109)

Question 1: How was Mij to be transported to England?

Answer: Maxwell was travelling to England by air, but the airline did not allow pets to move freely inside the plane. Therefore, Mij had to be carried in a small wooden box placed near Maxwell’s seat during the journey.

Question 2: What did Mij do to the box?

Answer: Mij became restless inside the box and tried hard to escape. In the process, he damaged the metal lining of the box and injured himself, causing blood to come out.

Question 3: Why did Maxwell put the otter back in the box? How do you think he felt when he did this?

Answer: Maxwell had no choice but to place Mij back into the box for the journey. He felt worried and sad because the otter had already hurt himself while trying to get out.

Question 4: Why does Maxwell say the airhostess was “the very queen of her kind”?

Answer: The air hostess behaved very kindly and sympathetically towards Maxwell and Mij. She understood his problem and allowed him to keep the otter on his lap during the flight. Her caring nature impressed Maxwell greatly.

Question 5: What happened when the box was opened?

Answer: As soon as the box was opened, Mij jumped out and began running around the aeroplane. The passengers became frightened, and one woman even climbed onto her seat in fear. After some time, Mij finally returned to Maxwell and climbed onto his knee.

Oral Comprehension Check ( पृष्ठ 110)

Question 1: What game had Mij invented?

Answer: Mij had created an interesting game with a ping-pong ball and a suitcase that had a sloping top. He would place the ball at the upper end and then run after it as it rolled down. This game kept him active and entertained for a long time.

Question 2: What are ‘compulsive habits’? What does Maxwell say are the compulsive habits of (i) school children (ii) Mij?

Answer: Compulsive habits are actions that a person or animal repeats again and again without being able to avoid them.

(i) Maxwell says that school children often develop habits such as stepping only on the middle of paving stones, touching certain railings, or walking in a fixed pattern along the road.

(ii) Mij also had a compulsive habit. Whenever he returned home, he would jump onto the boundary wall and run along its entire length in the same playful manner every time.

Question 3: What group of animals do otters belong to?

Answer: Otters belong to a group of animals known as Mustellines. This group also includes animals like badgers, weasels, mongooses, stoats, and minks.

Question 4: What guesses did the Londoners make about what Mij was?

Answer: Since most Londoners had never seen an otter before, they made many strange guesses about Mij. Some thought he was a baby seal, while others believed he was a squirrel, a walrus, a beaver, a bear cub, or even a small hippopotamus.

Thinking about the Text ( पृष्ठ 110-111)

Question 1: What things does Mij do which tell you he is an intelligent, friendly and fun-loving animal who needs love?

Answer: Mij showed his intelligence through many activities. He created a game with a ping-pong ball and a suitcase, which showed his playful and clever nature. He also learned how to open the bathroom tap by himself. At first, he stayed distant from Maxwell, but later he became very attached and affectionate towards him. During the flight, he climbed onto Maxwell and showed his need for care and love. His playful actions and friendly behaviour proved that he was a fun-loving and loving animal.

Question 2: What are some of the things we come to know about otters from this text?

Answer:From the text, we learn that otters belong to the Mustelline group of animals. They are intelligent, active, and very playful creatures. Otters enjoy water and love swimming and splashing around. They can become friendly with humans and may even be kept as pets. The chapter also shows that otters are curious animals that can learn new things quickly and invent games for their own entertainment.

Question 3: Why is Mij’s species now known to the world as Maxwell’s otter?

Answer: Mij belonged to a rare species of otter that was not well known to scientists earlier. Later, zoologists gave it the scientific name “Lutrogale Perspicillata Maxwelli” after Maxwell. Therefore, the species became famous as “Maxwell’s otter.”
