Question 1. Why is Bholi’s father worried about her?

Answer: Bholi’s father was anxious about her future because she was neither attractive nor clever like her sisters. After falling from a cot in childhood, her mind was affected. Later, smallpox left deep scars on her face and body. She also had a stammer, due to which people laughed at her. All these problems made her father concerned about her marriage and future life.

Question 2: For what unusual reasons is Bholi sent to school?

Answer: Bholi was sent to school because the Tehsildar asked Ramlal to set an example by educating his daughters. However, Bholi’s mother believed that educated girls would not get married easily, so she did not want her other daughters to attend school. Since Bholi was considered unattractive and unlikely to get married, her parents decided to send only her to school.

Question 3: Does Bholi enjoy her first day at school?

Answer:At first, Bholi felt nervous and frightened on her first day at school. She became embarrassed when the other girls laughed at her stammering. However, her teacher spoke kindly to her and encouraged her to study regularly. The friendly behaviour of the teacher made Bholi feel happy and hopeful, and she started enjoying school.

Question 4: Does she find her teacher different from the people at home?

Answer: Yes, Bholi found her teacher very different from the people at home. Unlike others who mocked her, the teacher treated her with kindness, patience, and understanding. She encouraged Bholi to work hard, speak confidently, and attend school daily. This loving behaviour gave Bholi confidence and self-respect.

Question 5: Why do Bholi’s parents accept Bishamber’s marriage proposal?

Answer: Bholi’s parents accepted Bishamber’s marriage proposal because they were worried about her future and feared that no one else would agree to marry her. Since Bishamber belonged to another village, he did not know much about Bholi’s appearance and weaknesses. Moreover, he had not demanded any dowry in the beginning, so her parents considered the proposal a good opportunity for her marriage.

Question 6: Why does the marriage not take place?

Answer: The marriage did not take place because Bishamber demanded five thousand rupees as dowry after seeing the pockmarks on Bholi’s face. Although Ramlal agreed to give the money to save his honour, Bholi refused to marry such a greedy and selfish man. She courageously rejected the marriage and threw the garland into the fire, showing her self-respect and confidence.

Think About It

Question 1: Bholi had many apprehensions about going to school. What made her feel that she was going to a better place than her home?

Answer: Before going to school, Bholi was given attention and care that she had never received at home. She was bathed properly, her hair was oiled and combed, and she was given clean clothes to wear. Usually, she wore her sisters’ old dresses and was ignored by everyone. This unusual care made her feel that she was being taken to a place better than her home.

Question 2: How did Bholi’s teacher play an important role in changing the course of her life?

Answer: Bholi’s teacher changed her life through love, encouragement, and education. She spoke kindly to Bholi and helped her overcome her fear and stammering. The teacher motivated her to study regularly and assured her that education would make her confident and respected. Her support filled Bholi with self-confidence and hope for a better future.

Question 3: Why did Bholi at first agree to an unequal match? Why did she later reject the marriage? What does this tell us about her?

Answer: At first, Bholi agreed to marry Bishamber because she believed it was a good match and thought her parents were fortunate to find a husband for her despite her physical weaknesses. However, when Bishamber demanded dowry after seeing her face, Bholi realised his greedy nature and refused to marry him. This shows that she had become confident, self-respecting, and capable of taking the right decision.

Question 4: Bholi’s real name is Sulekha. We are told this right at the beginning. But only in the last but one paragraph of the story is Bholi called Sulekha again. Why do you think she is called Sulekha at that point in the story?

Answer: The name “Bholi” suggests a simple and innocent girl, while “Sulekha” represents an educated, confident, and intelligent person. At the end of the story, she is called Sulekha because education had completely transformed her personality. She was no longer the weak and fearful girl people once mocked, but a confident young woman who stood up for her self-respect.

Talk About It

Question 1: Bholi’s teacher helped her overcome social barriers by encouraging and motivating her. How do you think you can contribute towards changing the social attitudes illustrated in this story?

Answer: We can help change such social attitudes by treating boys and girls equally and respecting everyone regardless of appearance or weaknesses. We should support girls’ education, spread awareness about equal rights, and oppose unfair practices like dowry. Encouraging confidence and self-respect in others can also help bring positive change in society.

Question 2: Should girls be aware of their rights, and assert them? Should girls and boys have the same rights, duties, and privileges? What are some of the ways society treats them differently? When we speak of human rights, do we differentiate between girls’ rights and boys’ rights?

Answer: Yes, girls should be aware of their rights and should confidently stand up for them. Girls and boys deserve equal rights, opportunities, duties, and privileges. However, society often treats them differently, especially in rural areas, where boys are usually given more importance in education and freedom. Girls are often expected to handle household work and follow strict rules. Human rights are equal for everyone, and there should be no difference between the rights of boys and girls.

Question 3: Do you think the characters in the story were speaking to each other in English? If not, in which language were they speaking?

Answer: No, the characters in the story were not speaking in English. They were most likely speaking in Hindi, as many words used in the story, such as “pitaji,” “izzat,” “tehsildar,” and “numberdar,” belong to the Hindi language.
