1. Explain the terms “Diurnal Range of Temperature” and “Annual Range of Temperature” with one example each.

Answer:

Diurnal range of temperature is the difference between the highest and lowest temperature recorded at a place during a single day. For example, if Bhopal records a maximum temperature of 32°C and a minimum of 27°C, its diurnal range is 5°C.

Annual range of temperature is the difference between the highest and lowest temperatures recorded at a place during a year. If Bhopal records 42°C as the highest and 27°C as the lowest temperature, its annual range is 15°C.

2. Why does Mumbai receive more rainfall than Pune although both are close to each other?

Answer:

Mumbai lies on the windward side of the Western Ghats and receives moisture-laden South-West Monsoon winds from the Arabian Sea. These winds are forced to rise along the slopes of the Ghats, cool and condense, causing heavy orographic rainfall.

Pune lies on the leeward side of the Western Ghats. By the time the winds reach Pune, they have lost much of their moisture, so the region lies in a rain shadow and receives considerably less rainfall.

3. Why are the Aravali ranges unable to cause significant rainfall in Rajasthan despite being a mountain range?

Answer:

The Aravali ranges run largely parallel to the direction of the South-West Monsoon winds. Therefore, the winds are not forced to rise significantly over the mountains.

Since there is little obstruction and uplift, the winds do not release much moisture over Rajasthan. As a result, the region receives comparatively little rainfall despite the presence of the Aravali ranges.

4. Why does the Malabar Coast have a lower annual range of temperature than Delhi?

Answer:

The Malabar Coast is located near the sea and experiences maritime influence. Water heats and cools slowly, so the sea moderates the temperature of nearby coastal areas.

Delhi is an interior region and experiences continentality. Land heats and cools more rapidly, resulting in greater temperature differences between summer and winter. Hence, Delhi has a much higher annual range than the Malabar Coast.

5. What is meant by Khadar and Bhangar soil? Give one difference between them.

Answer:

Khadar is the newer alluvial soil found mainly in low-lying flood plains. It is renewed regularly by the deposition of fresh silt during floods and is highly fertile.

Bhangar is older alluvial soil found on relatively higher ground. It contains kankar nodules and is comparatively less fertile.

The main difference is that Khadar is newer and regularly renewed, whereas Bhangar is older and is not renewed annually.

6. Why is Black soil best suited for the cultivation of cotton?

Answer:

Black soil has a high moisture-retention capacity because it contains very fine clay particles. This helps cotton plants receive moisture for a longer period.

The soil also develops deep cracks when it dries, making it naturally self-ploughing and allowing aeration. Its mineral composition also supports cotton cultivation. Hence, Black soil is commonly known as Cotton Soil or Regur Soil.

Answer:

Leaching is the process in which soluble nutrients and minerals are washed downward through the soil by heavy rainfall.

In regions with high temperature and heavy rainfall, leaching is intense. It removes many nutrients from the upper layer of the soil, resulting in the formation of Laterite soil. The soil is generally acidic and less fertile but can harden when exposed to air.

8. What is meant by a “Rain Shadow Area” with reference to the Western Ghats?

Answer:

A rain shadow area is a region on the leeward side of a mountain range that receives little rainfall because the moisture-laden winds have already released most of their moisture on the windward side.

In India, areas of the Deccan Plateau such as Pune lie on the leeward side of the Western Ghats and receive much less rainfall than the coastal areas on the windward side.

9. Why are Tropical Evergreen forests not commercially exploited on a large scale?

Answer:

Tropical Evergreen forests are extremely dense and multi-layered, making movement and timber extraction difficult. Different species also grow together rather than forming large pure stands.

In addition, these forests occur in regions of high rainfall and humidity, which can make transportation and logging difficult. Therefore, they are not commercially exploited as extensively as deciduous forests.

10. What are Stilt roots and Pneumatophores? In which type of forest are they found?

Answer:

Stilt roots are strong, supporting roots that extend from the trunk and help mangrove trees remain stable in loose, muddy soil.

Pneumatophores are vertical breathing roots that project above waterlogged soil and help the plant obtain oxygen.

Both are characteristic features of Littoral or Mangrove forests, such as those found in the Sundarbans.

Answer:

Answer:

An inundation canal is a canal that is taken directly from a river without a dam or barrage. Water enters the canal when the river level is sufficiently high.

Its main disadvantage is that the water supply is uncertain and seasonal. When the river level falls, the canal may not receive enough water and cannot provide a dependable supply throughout the year.

14. Why is Drip irrigation not practised on a large scale in India despite being highly efficient?

Answer:

Drip irrigation requires a network of pipes and outlets to deliver water directly to individual plants. The installation and maintenance of this system can involve a high initial cost.

Many small and marginal farmers may not have sufficient capital to install such systems. Therefore, despite its high water efficiency, drip irrigation is not used on a very large scale across all types of farming.

The Himalayas act as an important climatic barrier between the Indian subcontinent and Central Asia.

Firstly, they block extremely cold winds from Siberia from entering the northern plains during winter. This prevents the region from experiencing much lower temperatures.

Secondly, the Himalayas obstruct the South-West Monsoon winds and prevent them from moving directly into Central Asia. The winds are forced to rise, cool and release moisture, resulting in rainfall over several parts of India.

Thus, the Himalayas influence both the temperature and rainfall of India and create a major climatic difference between the regions north and south of the range.

2. With the help of a suitable example, explain the concept of “Windward Side” and “Leeward Side” and how they influence rainfall distribution.

Answer:

The windward side is the slope of a mountain that directly faces moisture-laden winds. When these winds strike the mountain, they are forced to rise. As the air rises, it cools and condenses, resulting in heavy orographic rainfall.

The leeward side is the opposite slope. By the time the winds cross the mountain, they have lost much of their moisture. Therefore, the leeward side receives comparatively little rainfall and forms a rain shadow area.

The Western Ghats provide a suitable example. Mumbai and the Konkan coast lie on the windward side and receive heavy rainfall, whereas Pune lies on the leeward side and receives considerably less rainfall.

3. Describe how Continentality and Maritime Influence affect the diurnal and annual range of temperature.

Answer:

Continentality is experienced by areas located away from the sea. Land heats and cools quickly. Therefore, interior regions can become very hot during the day and cool rapidly at night. They also experience greater differences between summer and winter temperatures, resulting in a high diurnal and annual range.

Maritime influence is experienced by coastal regions. Water heats and cools much more slowly than land, so the sea moderates the temperature of nearby areas.

Land and sea breezes also help moderate coastal temperatures. As a result, places such as Mumbai and Kochi generally experience a lower diurnal and annual range than inland cities such as Delhi.

4. Explain the mechanism of the South-West Monsoon and why it is called “South-West”.

Answer:

During summer, the northern landmass of India heats up rapidly and develops an area of low pressure. The Indian Ocean remains comparatively cooler and has relatively higher pressure.

Winds move from areas of high pressure towards areas of low pressure. The South-East Trade Winds from the Southern Hemisphere are therefore drawn towards the low-pressure area over India.

When these winds cross the Equator, the Coriolis force deflects them towards the right. They consequently begin to blow from the south-west direction and enter India as the South-West Monsoon.

Since the winds travel over the ocean, they carry large amounts of moisture and bring widespread rainfall, mainly from June to September.

Alluvial soil is considered highly fertile because it contains fresh deposits of silt and important minerals. The regular deposition of sediments, particularly in flood plains, helps maintain soil fertility.

This makes alluvial regions highly suitable for crops such as rice, wheat, sugarcane, jute, pulses and cotton.

7. Explain why Black soil is also called “Self-ploughing Soil” and describe its main characteristics.

Answer:

Black soil is formed mainly from the weathering of basaltic lava rocks in the Deccan Trap region. It contains very fine clay particles and has a high moisture-retention capacity.

When the soil becomes wet, it swells and becomes sticky. When it dries, it shrinks and develops deep cracks. These cracks help the soil break apart naturally and allow air to enter. Since the soil partly tills itself through this process, it is called self-ploughing soil.

Its other characteristics include high moisture retention and the presence of minerals such as lime, iron, magnesium and potash. It is particularly suitable for cotton cultivation, which is why it is also called Regur or Cotton Soil.

8. Explain the main causes of Soil Erosion in India.

Answer:

Soil erosion is caused by both natural agents and human activities.

Running water can remove the topsoil in the form of sheet erosion and gradually form rills and deep gullies. Wind can carry away loose soil particles, particularly in dry and semi-arid areas.

Human activities also accelerate soil erosion. Deforestation removes tree roots that bind the soil, while overgrazing destroys protective vegetation. Faulty farming practices, shifting cultivation and construction activities can also leave the soil exposed.

Therefore, uncontrolled removal of vegetation and improper land-use practices can increase the rate of soil erosion.

9. Explain any five methods of Soil Conservation.

Answer:

Five important methods of soil conservation are:

  1. Terrace Farming: Step-like terraces are constructed on steep slopes to slow down water flow and reduce soil erosion.

  2. Contour Ploughing: Ploughing is carried out across the slope so that the furrows slow down surface run-off and prevent soil from being washed away.

  3. Shelterbelts: Rows of trees are planted to reduce the speed of strong winds and control wind erosion.

  4. Strip Cropping: Crops are grown in alternate strips so that one strip can help protect the soil in another strip from wind and water erosion.

  5. Afforestation: Planting trees increases vegetation cover and allows roots to bind the soil, reducing erosion.

10. Explain the characteristic features of Tropical Deciduous (Monsoon) Forests and why they are the most commercially useful forests of India.

Answer:

Tropical Deciduous forests are also called Monsoon forests because their growth is closely associated with seasonal rainfall. They are divided into Moist Deciduous and Dry Deciduous forests.

Their most important feature is that trees shed their leaves during the dry season to reduce water loss. The leaves grow again with the arrival of the rainy season.

These forests contain commercially valuable trees such as Teak, Sal, Sandalwood and Sheesham. Their trees often occur in relatively accessible stretches, making timber extraction easier than in dense evergreen forests.

Because of their valuable timber and wide distribution, Tropical Deciduous forests are among the most commercially exploited forests in India.

Answer:

Mangrove or Littoral forests grow in tidal, deltaic and waterlogged regions where the soil is loose and often submerged.

Since ordinary roots cannot provide sufficient support in the soft muddy soil, mangrove trees develop stilt roots that help anchor and support the plants.

The waterlogged soil also contains very little oxygen. To overcome this problem, mangrove plants develop pneumatophores, which project above the soil and help the plant obtain oxygen.

These adaptations allow mangroves to survive in difficult coastal environments. They also help protect coastlines from erosion and provide habitats for many forms of wildlife.

12. Explain the significance and importance of Rainwater Harvesting in India.

Answer:

Rainwater harvesting is the collection and storage of rainwater for direct use or groundwater recharge. It is important because rainfall in India is seasonal and unevenly distributed.

Groundwater is increasingly being used for domestic needs and irrigation, leading to declining groundwater levels in several areas. Rainwater harvesting helps recharge underground water sources and reduces dependence on groundwater.

It can also reduce surface run-off, flooding and soil erosion. Even areas receiving heavy rainfall may face water shortages if rainwater quickly flows away. Therefore, collecting and storing rainwater is an important method of sustainable water management.

Answer:

The Indian monsoon is closely linked to the differential heating of land and water and seasonal changes in atmospheric pressure.

During summer, the northern Indian landmass heats up rapidly. This creates an area of low pressure over northern India, while the Indian Ocean remains comparatively cooler and has relatively higher pressure.

Winds move from high-pressure areas towards low-pressure areas. The South-East Trade Winds from the Southern Hemisphere are therefore drawn towards India. After crossing the Equator, the winds are deflected by the Coriolis force and begin to blow from the south-west. They enter India as the South-West Monsoon, generally beginning around June.

The monsoon winds carry large amounts of moisture after travelling over the ocean. They enter India through two major branches — the Arabian Sea branch and the Bay of Bengal branch. These branches distribute rainfall over different parts of the country.

3. Describe the four major types of soil found in India with reference to their formation, characteristics, distribution and crops grown.

Answer:

India has four major soil types:

1. Alluvial Soil: Alluvial soil is a transported soil formed by the deposition of sediments carried by rivers such as the Indus, Ganga and Brahmaputra. It is widely found in the northern plains and river deltas. It is divided into Khadar and Bhangar. It is highly fertile and suitable for crops such as rice, wheat, sugarcane, jute, pulses and cotton.

2. Black Soil: Black soil is a residual soil formed mainly from the weathering of basaltic lava rocks. It is common in the Deccan Trap region. It has a high moisture-retention capacity and develops deep cracks when dry, giving it its self-ploughing characteristic. It is particularly suitable for cotton, as well as crops such as jowar and groundnut.

3. Red Soil: Red soil develops from the weathering of crystalline and metamorphic rocks. Its red colour is mainly due to iron oxide. It is generally porous and comparatively poor in nutrients such as nitrogen and humus. It occurs in several parts of the Peninsular Plateau and can support crops such as millets and rice with suitable irrigation and fertilisation.

4. Laterite Soil: Laterite soil develops under conditions of high temperature and heavy rainfall due to intense leaching. It is found in high-rainfall regions and on the summits of parts of the Western and Eastern Ghats. It is generally acidic and poor in nutrients but can support plantation crops such as tea, coffee, cashew and rubber when properly managed. Answer:

India has five major types of natural vegetation:

1. Tropical Evergreen Forests: These forests occur in regions receiving more than 200 cm of rainfall and having high temperatures and humidity. They are found in areas such as the Western Ghats, North-Eastern hills and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The forests are dense and multi-layered, with trees such as Rosewood, Mahogany and Ebony. Trees do not shed their leaves simultaneously, so the forests remain green throughout the year.

2. Tropical Deciduous Forests: These are also called Monsoon forests and are the most widespread forest type. They are divided into Moist and Dry Deciduous forests. Trees shed their leaves during the dry season to conserve water. Valuable species include Teak, Sal, Sandalwood and Sheesham.

3. Thorn and Desert Forests: These forests occur in areas receiving less than 50 cm rainfall. Plants are xerophytic and have adaptations such as thorns, deep roots and waxy surfaces to reduce water loss. Examples include Babool, Khejri and Date Palm.

4. Littoral/Mangrove Forests: These forests grow in tidal and deltaic areas such as the Sundarbans. They have special adaptations such as stilt roots for support and pneumatophores for breathing in waterlogged soil.

Answer:

Irrigation is necessary in India because rainfall is seasonal, uncertain and unevenly distributed. Different irrigation methods are used depending on soil, terrain, water availability and crop requirements.

Conventional methods include:
