1. What difficulty do the crew of the space probe face on the Earth?
Ans: The crew of the space probe landed in a public library and became confused because they had never seen books before. They did not understand the purpose of books and wrongly assumed that the library was some kind of storage building or warehouse.
2. What is Think-Tank proud of? How do you know?
Ans: Think-Tank is very proud of the Martian race and considers himself extremely intelligent and superior. His pride is shown through his arrogant behaviour, self-praise, and insulting comments about Earth and humans. He calls Earth an “insignificant place” and a “primitive ball of mud.”
3. It is morally incorrect to invade another country/planet for one's own benefit. The Martians did not understand the value of peaceful coexistence. How did the book of nursery rhymes save the Earth from the Martian invasion?
Ans: The nursery rhyme book Mother Goose saved the Earth by creating fear and misunderstanding among the Martians. They misunderstood the rhymes as descriptions of attacks on Mars and believed humans were very powerful and dangerous. Out of fear, they cancelled their mission and called back their troops, which prevented the invasion of Earth.
4. What does Noodle tell Think-Tank about the books?
Ans: Noodle explains to Think-Tank that Earthlings do not eat books. Instead, they use books for communication and learning. He also says that people open books and look at them carefully to understand the information written inside.
5. The play, 'The Book that Saved the Earth', conveys the message that misunderstanding of cultural differences between various races can cause confusion and conflict. Based on your reading of the play, write how such confusion and conflicts can be checked so that peace and harmony are maintained.
Ans: The play highlights the need for proper communication and mutual understanding among different cultures and races. Confusion and conflict can be avoided if people respect each other’s traditions, languages, beliefs, and lifestyles. Learning about different cultures helps develop trust and cooperation, which further promotes peace and harmony in society.
6. Little knowledge may lead to a disaster. Describe it with reference to the lesson, 'The Book that Saved the Earth'.
Ans: In the play, the Martians had very little knowledge about Earth and its people, which created confusion and fear. Think-Tank wrongly guessed the purpose of books and misunderstood the nursery rhymes in Mother Goose. Because of this false understanding, the Martians became frightened and cancelled their mission. The story clearly shows that incomplete knowledge can lead to wrong decisions and serious problems.
7. How did the book change Think-Tank's opinion about the Earthlings?
Ans: The book Mother Goose completely changed Think-Tank’s opinion about humans. The Martians misunderstood the nursery rhymes and thought that Earthlings were extremely powerful and dangerous. Think-Tank became terrified and believed that humans were planning to attack Mars. As a result, he decided to stop the invasion and leave Earth immediately.
8. Compare and contrast the characters of Great and Mighty Think-Tank and Noodle.
Ans: Think-Tank, the ruler of Mars, is arrogant, boastful, and overconfident. He always wants others to praise him and obey his commands. Although he pretends to be intelligent, he misunderstands almost everything, including books found on Earth. He often takes credit for others’ ideas and behaves like a coward despite his claims of greatness.
Noodle, on the other hand, is intelligent, calm, and wise. He politely corrects Think-Tank’s mistakes without hurting his ego. Unlike Think-Tank, Noodle is humble and never boasts about his intelligence. Even though he is more sensible than his ruler, he remains respectful and obedient throughout the play.
