ThAAD System: An Advanced Air Defense

The ThAAD System (Terminal High Altitude Area Defense System) is a sophisticated air defense system developed by the USA. It is designed to destroy incoming threats in the air using "Hit to Kill" technology, intercepting targets by direct impact. The system features a radar capable of detecting objects from 150 km to 200 km and has a maximum range of 200 km. Each system costs approximately US$12-15 million.

Recently, a ThAAD system deployed by the USA at its Muwaqaf Salti Airbase in Jordan was destroyed by Iran. Other countries possessing ThAAD include Israel (also deployed in Jordan) and South Korea.

Other notable air defense systems include Israel's Iron Dome and Russia's S-400 (also used by India). India's indigenous air defense systems are Indrajal and Akash Teer, while Pinaka is a rocket launcher, not an air defense system.

International Tiger Day is celebrated on July 29. India hosts over 70% of the world's tiger population. Project Tiger was initiated in nine Tiger Reserves, including Ranthambore. The National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) is headed by the Environment Ministry, not the Prime Minister.

The Big Cat Alliance was launched in Karnataka, India, with Russia as its latest member. Member cats include the Jaguar, Snow Leopard, and Puma, but not the Himalayan Wolf.

Lekhim Dance Sets Guinness World Record

A Guinness World Record for a mass dance performance was achieved in Dombivli, Maharashtra, on International Women's Day (March 8). The event, themed "Give to Gain," featured 9,111 women and girls performing the Lekhim Dance, a folk dance of Maharashtra.

This broke the previous record of 7,338 participants. Historically, Lekhim dance was a martial art associated with the Maratha Dynasty before becoming a folk dance. Other folk dances from Maharashtra include Tamasha and Lavani. Folk dances are community or state-specific, unlike the eight recognized classical dances of India.

Identifying correctly matched pairs of Biodiversity Heritage Sites is important. These sites are crucial for conserving specific ecological areas.

India's First Ring Metro in Delhi

PM Modi inaugurated India's First Ring Metro in Delhi. This project expands Delhi's already extensive metro network, specifically extending the Pink Line and Magenta Line. Part of Phase 5 of the Delhi Metro expansion, the Ring Metro now covers 71.56 km.

The concept of a Ring Metro functions as an outer circular route, providing a bypass for the city. It covers areas like Majlis Park, Maujpur, and the Burari Corridor. The Namo Metro/Train is a related regional train service connecting Delhi and Meerut.

Maharashtra has Nagpur as its Winter Capital and Mumbai as its Summer Capital.

"Say No to Proxy Sarpanch" Campaign

The Government of India and the Ministry of Panchayati Raj launched the "Say No to Proxy Sarpanch" campaign. Its primary objective is to eliminate the "Sarpanch Pati" practice, where male relatives of elected female Sarpanches illegally exercise authority. This campaign runs from March 8 (International Women's Day) to March 18.

The Panchayati Raj System, introduced by the 73rd Constitutional Amendment Act of 1992 and implemented nationwide on April 24, 1993, includes Article 243D, which mandates reservation for women in Panchayats. This reservation often leads to situations necessitating such a campaign.

(Memory Tip: "Proxy" attendance in class helps understand "Proxy Sarpanch" – a representative is present on paper, but the actual authority is elsewhere.)

Indian Geography Review

Major tributaries of the Krishna River include the Bhima, Tungabhadra, Paleru, and Muneru rivers. The Kabini River is a tributary of the Kaveri, not the Krishna.

The Western Ghats are characterized by continuous mountain ranges, while the Eastern Ghats are broken and discontinuous due to east-flowing rivers forming deltas. The statement that the green escarpment of the Western Ghats acts as a primary water divide between the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal is incorrect.
