The Supreme Court of India has issued a significant directive regarding the treatment of Autism, specifically addressing stem cell therapy. Autism is a neurological condition where the brain's functioning is imbalanced, affecting the body's control systems.
A two-judge bench, comprising Justice Pardiwala and Justice Mahadevan, ruled that stem cell therapy cannot be used as a routine cure for autism in India. The court stated that "Stem cell therapy cannot be offered as routine commercial clinical treatment."
Stem cells are unique cells with the capacity to develop into entire organs. They possess immense regenerative power.
The court's decision is based on the following concerns and prerequisites:
Potential for Misuse: There is a significant risk of stem cells being misused.
Need for Further Research: Before widespread use, more research is required to determine how stem cell therapy can be properly and safely applied.
Development of Effective Therapies: Research must focus on creating long-lasting and effective therapeutic protocols.
Establishment of an Oversight Committee: A proper committee must be formed to review and monitor the use of this therapy on an ongoing basis.
Only after these conditions are met can the use of stem cell therapy be reconsidered.
Note: World Autism Awareness Day is observed on April 2nd.
