India has designated two new Ramser Sites, located in Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat, bringing the total number of sites to 98.
A Ramser Site is a designated wetland, defined as an area where water is found up to 6 meters below the surface. The name "Ramser" originates from a city in Iran, where the Convention on Wetlands was first held on February 2nd, 1971. This date is now celebrated annually as World Wetlands Day. India became a signatory to the Ramser Convention in 1982.
First Ramser Site: Chilika Lake
Largest Ramser Site: Sundarban Delta
Smallest Ramser Site: Renuka Lake
India now has a total of 98 Ramser Sites. The state with the maximum number of Ramser Sites is Tamil Nadu, with 20 sites.
The two new sites are:
97th Site: Patna Bird Sanctuary
Location: Etah, Uttar Pradesh. (It is not in Patna, Bihar, despite the name).
Key Species: Notable for the Rosy Pelican.
98th Site: Chari-Dhand Wetland Conservation Reserve
Location: Kutch, Gujarat.
Key Species: Known for various species of Cranes.
Unique Phenomenon: Famous for Chir Batti (Ghost Lights), an unexplained ethereal light phenomenon observed after sunset.
Recent preceding Ramser Sites include the 96th Site: Sili Lake (Siliserh Lake), Rajasthan; 95th Site: Kopra Dam, Chhattisgarh; and 94th Site: Gogabeel, Bihar. This announcement was made by the Ministry of Environment, headed by Bhupendra Yadav.
