MP Assembly Election 2023: Later this year, the Madhya Pradesh Assembly elections will take place. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress are expected to engage in a close election campaign in the state. The Congress, along with two other states—Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan—had swept to victory in the state during the most recent assembly elections, which were held in 2018. The Congress party won 114 of the 230 seats in the Madhya Pradesh Assembly, defeating the BJP's 109 seats to end the saffron party's 15-year hegemony in the state.

The Chouhan-led government's numerous social initiatives are the focus of the BJP's increased election preparations, which are taking place just months before the Madhya Pradesh Assembly elections. The BJP is attempting to make sure that in harder seats as part of its election plan in MP, particularly in tribal areas and in the constituencies where the Congress has a historical advantage. Curiously, the BJP announced its candidates for 39 seats in the state that it had lost in the previous Assembly elections, marking a first. The list contained five women candidates and 21 reserved constituencies, including 13 seats for Scheduled Tribes (ST) and 8 seats for Scheduled Castes (SC).

While the Samajwadi Party announced its candidates for four constituencies, all of which are located in the Bundelkhand and Gwalior-Chambal regions, the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), which is also in the race, has revealed the names of seven candidates on its initial list.

MP Election Dates 2023

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has not yet released the timetable for the elections in Madhya Pradesh in 2023. The Model Code of Conduct shall take effect immediately upon the ECI's announcement of the election dates. The final elections in Madhya Pradesh in 2018 were held on November 28 in a single phase for all 230 seats. Voter tallies were tallied on December 11, 2018.

Madhya Pradesh has 230 Assembly seats. The Congress won 114 seats in the 2018 elections, falling short of the 116 seats needed for a majority, and the BJP came in second place with 109 seats. Two seats were gained by the Bahujan Samaj Party, and one by the Samajwadi Party. Independents won four seats in the legislature. Arun Yadav of the Congress was beaten by Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan in his home district of Budhni by a margin of 58,699 votes.

The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and Congress each won 58 seats in the 2013 Assembly elections, while the BJP got 166 seats, giving them a commanding majority.

MP Assembly Election 2023 Candidates list so Far

There have been 79 names announced in the BJP's three lists that have been released thus far. The third list had a single name, as opposed to the first and second lists' 39 names.

Only the first list, which includes the names of 10 candidates, has been provided by the AAP.

The BSP has thus far made 16 names public. Seven names were on the first list, while nine names were on the second list.

MP Assembly Election Opinion Polls 2023

For the Madhya Pradesh elections, four different surveys of public opinion have produced conflicting results for the major parties. While two forecast a re-election of the BJP administration led by Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, the other two predict a convincing victory for the Congress. 116 is the magic number needed to create a government.

The ABP-CVoter poll predicts that the Congress will win 108 to 120 of the 230 seats available, while the BJP will come in with a little lower total of 106 to 118. Another pre-election survey by IBC24 forecasts that the Congress would win easily, taking home 119 seats, while the BJP may only manage 101 seats, falling short of its 2018 total of 109.

While the BJP has insisted that Shivraj Singh Chouhan will head the party in the Madhya Pradesh Assembly elections, it is yet unknown who the candidates for chief minister for the Congress, BSP, Samajwadi Party, and Aam Aadmi Party will be. The name of former Chief Minister Kamal Nath, however, is a subject of rumor for the Congress.

Shivraj Singh Chouhan will represent the BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the national general secretary of the party, Kailash Vijayvargiya, had announced, indicating his CM bid.

The Madhya Pradesh Assembly elections would be contested under the direction of state Congress president Kamal Nath, who will be the CM face, according to Rajya Sabha MP and former chief minister Digvijaya Singh.

After the Congress won the election in 2018, Nath became the new chief executive in December. At the time, he was a Chhindwara Lok Sabha MP. He had six months to become an MLA in order to keep his position as chief minister. In order to do this, a by-election was organized for the Chhindwara assembly seat when its MLA, Deepak Saxena, resigned from the state house. Saxena was a close lieutenant of Nath. Along with the Lok Sabha elections, a by-election for the Chhindwara Assembly constituency was held, which Nath won and later took the oath of office as an MLA.
