MPPSC State Service Examination consists of multiple stages to assess your knowledge, aptitude, and suitability for administrative services. You must qualify each stage to move to the next. The final selection is based on your performance in the prescribed stages of the recruitment process.
The Preliminary Examination is the first stage of the MPPSC selection process. It is conducted to shortlist candidates for the Main Examination and serves as a screening test. The marks obtained in this stage are not considered while preparing the final merit list. Candidates who secure the prescribed cut-off marks are shortlisted for the next stage.

Candidates meeting the cut-off qualify for the Main Examination |
The Preliminary Examination is designed to shortlist candidates and does not determine the final selection. However, performing well is essential because only candidates who clear the cut-off are eligible to appear for the Mains Examination.
Candidates who qualify the Preliminary Examination are called for the Main Examination. Unlike the Prelims, the Main Examination plays an important role in the final selection because the marks obtained in this stage are considered while preparing the final merit list.
The Main Examination consists of descriptive papers that evaluate your understanding of subjects, analytical thinking, writing ability, and overall knowledge. Since this stage carries significant weight in the recruitment process, regular answer-writing practice and conceptual clarity are important for scoring well.
Candidates who qualify the Main Examination are called for the Interview, also known as the Personality Test. This stage is conducted to assess whether you possess the qualities required for administrative and leadership roles in the Madhya Pradesh Government. The Interview carries 175 marks, and these marks are added to the Mains marks while preparing the final merit list.
During the Interview, the board may assess:
Communication skills
Decision-making ability
Leadership qualities
Presence of mind
General awareness and current affairs
Knowledge of Madhya Pradesh
Administrative aptitude
Overall personality and suitability for public service
The Interview is not based only on factual knowledge. It also evaluates how confidently and logically you present your views while responding to different situations.
Candidates who clear the Interview are called for Document Verification. At this stage, MPPSC verifies all the information submitted during the application process. You must produce the original documents along with the required photocopies as instructed by the Commission. Any discrepancy in the submitted information or failure to produce the required original documents may lead to the cancellation of candidature as per Commission rules.

The final merit list is prepared only after all stages of the recruitment process are completed. Unlike the Preliminary Examination, the marks obtained in the Main Examination and Interview determine your final rank.
The final selection is based on:
Marks obtained in the Main Examination
Marks obtained in the Interview (175 marks)
Reservation rules applicable to your category
Post preferences submitted by you
Availability of vacancies
The marks scored in the Preliminary Examination are not included while preparing the final merit list. They are used only for shortlisting candidates for the Main Examination.
