The Maharashtra Public Service Commission has officially announced major reforms in the answer sheets and evaluation process of MCQ-based exams. These changes introduce stricter rules for negative marking, answer-sheet validation, and the newly added fifth option, making disciplined marking more important than ever for aspirants.
The revised examination and evaluation framework will be implemented from 1st March 2026 across all state-level MPSC objective examinations. These updates aim to enhance transparency, accuracy, and fairness in result assessment while minimising technical and clerical errors during evaluation.
Two-Copy Carbonless Answer Sheet System Introduced
Under the new system, answer sheets will now be provided in two carbonless copies:
Original Copy – Submitted to MPSC after the exam
Candidate Copy – Students can retain it for reference
The original sheet will have two parts:
Part 1 – For marking answers only
Part 2 – For candidate & exam details, including
Examination name
Candidate seat number
Question paper number
Subject code
Candidate & Invigilator signatures
The invigilator will separate both parts after completion of the exam.
The candidate’s seat number will now be a 7-digit numeric code, replacing the old 8-character alphanumeric format.
This same number will remain valid throughout the recruitment cycle.
One of the most significant changes in the MPSC answer sheets and evaluation process is the introduction of a mandatory fifth option.
This option must be selected when a candidate chooses not to attempt a question.
If a candidate leaves the question blank without selecting the fifth option, 1/4th marks will be deducted automatically
Marks will be deducted in the following situations:
Selecting more than one option
Correcting or over-shading an answer
Marking a wrong option
Recording answers incorrectly
Each such case will incur 25% (¼th) negative marking per question.
Even fractional total marks will be treated as valid.
The Commission has warned candidates that the answer sheet may be treated as invalid if they:
Forget to sign
Use the wrong type of ink or pen
Add symbols or extra markings
Fail to fill in the question booklet number
Leave identification fields incomplete
Candidates must now follow strict discipline to avoid disqualification.
The updated MPSC answer sheets and evaluation process is designed to:
Reduce mistakes in answer marking
Improve transparency in evaluation
Prevent unfair marking practices
Streamline record-keeping
Strengthen exam discipline
This move reflects the Commission’s effort to modernise the recruitment process and ensure fairness across all stages.
