History, Culture and Odisha's Freedom Struggle

A. Non-Cooperation Movement (1920–1922) and Odisha

The Non-Cooperation Movement was started to fight against British rule in India. People stopped supporting British schools, courts, and other institutions.

In Odisha, this movement became very popular.

  • Leadership: Pandit Gopabandhu Das played an important role in leading the movement. Utkal Sammilani also supported it.

  • Methods of Protest: Students left government schools, and lawyers stopped working in British courts.

  • Use of Khadi: People were encouraged to wear Khadi clothes and spin their own thread.

  • National Schools: New schools were opened to provide education without British control.

  • Odisha's Identity: The movement also helped people demand a separate state for people who spoke the Odia language.

As a result, Odisha became a separate state in 1936.

B. Art and Architecture During the Gupta Period

The Gupta period is known as the Golden Age of Indian History because art, culture, science, and architecture developed greatly during this time.

Important developments included:

  • Temple Building: People started building temples using stones and bricks. These temples had tall structures on top called Shikhara.

  • Famous Temples: The Dashavatara Temple at Deogarh and the Bhitargaon Temple are important examples.

  • Cave Paintings: Beautiful paintings were made in the Ajanta Caves.

  • Religious Support: Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism received support during this period.

  • Mathura School of Art: Art and sculpture became highly developed.

C. Formation of the Indian National Congress (1885)

The Indian National Congress (INC) was formed in December 1885.

It was started by a retired British officer named Allan Octavian Hume.

Safety Valve Theory:

  • This theory says that the British helped form the Congress to give educated Indians a peaceful way to express their anger.

  • The British wanted to stop people from starting violent protests against their rule.

  • However, the Congress later became a major organisation in India's freedom struggle.

D. Veer Surendra Sai and the Revolt of 1857

Veer Surendra Sai was a brave freedom fighter from Western Odisha.

  • He fought against British rule in the Sambalpur region.

  • He opposed the British takeover of his kingdom.

  • He received support from tribal people and farmers.

  • He used a fighting method called guerrilla warfare. This means attacking the enemy suddenly and then moving away quickly.

  • His fight became an important part of the Revolt of 1857.

Regional Culture, Society and Traditions

A. Literature and Tribal Traditions of Odisha

Odisha has a rich history of literature and tribal culture.

  • Panchasakha: This group helped spread religious teachings through the local Odia language so that ordinary people could understand them.

  • Fakir Mohan Senapati: He was a famous writer who used his writings to spread awareness and bring social change.

  • Tribal Communities: Tribal people have a close relationship with forests. They protect trees, plants, animals, and natural resources.

B. How the Kondh Tribe Lives in Harmony with Nature

The Kondh tribe mainly lives in the hilly areas of Southern Odisha, such as Kandhamal, Gajapati, Kalahandi, and Rayagada.

They have special ways of living according to their surroundings.

  • Podu Farming: They practise a type of farming on hill slopes called Podu cultivation.

  • Growing Millets: They grow crops like Ragi and Little Millet. These crops can grow even when there is less rainfall.

  • Forest Protection: They respect and protect forests. The Niyamgiri Hills are an important part of their culture.

C. Rights of Transgender People

Transgender people should have the same rights and respect as everyone else.

Important steps are needed to:

  • Give them equal chances to study.

  • Provide proper healthcare.

  • Help them get houses and jobs.

  • Protect them from unfair treatment.

  • Allow them to live with dignity and freedom.

The law recognises a person's right to identify their own gender.

 Geography, Environment and Climate Change

A. Human Activities and Climate Change

Human activities are causing many changes in the Earth's climate.

  • Factories release harmful gases into the air.

  • Cutting down forests increases global warming.

  • A growing population increases the use of natural resources.

  • Too much carbon dioxide enters the oceans. This makes seawater more acidic and harms sea animals.

Problems faced by Odisha:

  • High land temperatures of around 34°C and warm sea temperatures of 26°C–27°C can make cyclones stronger in the Bay of Bengal.

  • Mining activities in Northern and Southern Odisha cause the loss of forests and damage to soil.

B. Pacific Ring of Fire

The Pacific Ring of Fire is an area around the Pacific Ocean where many earthquakes and volcanoes occur.

  • It is responsible for more than 80% of the world's earthquake activity.

  • Around 70% of the world's active volcanoes are found in this region.

  • It has valuable minerals and natural resources.

  • Many countries are interested in this region because of its minerals and sea resources.

C. Environmental Problems in Odisha

Different parts of Odisha face different environmental problems.

Region

Main Problems

Reasons

Eastern Ghats

Landslides and soil movement

Heavy rainfall, cutting of trees and damage to hill slopes

Coastal Odisha

Coastal erosion and strong sea waves

Cyclones, storms and rising sea water

Important points:

  • Odisha has a coastline of about 480 km to 574 km.

  • Bhitarkanika has mangrove forests that help protect the coast.

  • Olive Ridley turtles visit Odisha's coast in large numbers to lay eggs.

D. Problems Caused by Urbanisation in India

Urbanisation means the growth of towns and cities.

Many people move from villages to cities to find jobs, education, and better living conditions.

But rapid growth of cities also creates problems:

  • Shortage of clean drinking water.

  • Poor drainage and sanitation facilities.

  • Growth of slums and overcrowded areas.

  • Many people work in jobs without proper job security.

  • People build houses on wetlands, which can cause floods.

Cities like Bengaluru and Bhubaneswar face problems of urban flooding.

Heritage, Government and International Relations

A. Protection of the Konark Sun Temple

The Konark Sun Temple is a famous historical monument in Odisha.

  • During British rule, the main hall of the temple, called the Jagamohana, was filled with sand to stop it from falling down.

  • Today, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) is working to protect the temple.

  • Experts are carefully removing the sand in stages.

  • Modern machines and methods are used to check the temple's condition and prevent damage.

  • Protecting the temple also helps tourism in Odisha.

B. States Reorganisation Commission (1953)

The States Reorganisation Commission was formed in 1953.

Its main work was to suggest changes in the boundaries of Indian states.

  • It recommended creating states based mainly on the languages spoken by people.

  • This helped people live in states where their language and culture were respected.

  • It also helped maintain unity in India.

C. Importance of Great Nicobar Island

Great Nicobar Island is an important island of India. It is located near the Strait of Malacca.

The Strait of Malacca is a narrow sea route through which many ships carrying goods and oil travel.

What is the Malacca Dilemma?

  • China depends heavily on the Strait of Malacca for transporting oil and goods.

  • If this sea route is blocked, China's trade and oil supply may face serious problems.

  • This problem is known as the Malacca Dilemma.

Why is Great Nicobar Island important for India?

  • It is located near an important international sea route.

  • India can watch the movement of ships in this area.

  • India plans to develop ports, naval bases, and airports.
