Is MBBS in Kazakhstan Valid in India? NMC Guidelines Explained

MBBS in Kazakhstan is valid in India if the course follows National Medical Commission (NMC) guidelines under FMGL Regulations 2021. Students must complete a 54-month course, 12-month internship in the same university, and pass FMGE or the upcoming NExT exam. Is MBBS in Kazakhstan Valid in India? NMC Guidelines Explained

Is MBBS in Kazakhstan Valid in India is one of the most important questions for Indian students planning to pursue medical education abroad. With Kazakhstan becoming a popular destination due to its affordable fees and globally recognized universities, understanding the validity of the degree in India is crucial. The recognition of an MBBS degree depends on compliance with guidelines set by the National Medical Commission (NMC), including course duration, internship requirements, and licensing exams. Having clarity on these rules helps students make informed decisions and ensures a smooth pathway to practicing medicine in India.

Is MBBS in Kazakhstan Valid in India?

For an MBBS degree from Kazakhstan to be valid in India, the National Medical Commission (NMC) requires the program to meet specific academic and clinical benchmarks. Since the introduction of the FMGL Regulations on November 18, 2021, the validity of a foreign degree depends on the following non-negotiable standards.

Core NMC Rules for MBBS Abroad (2024-25)

The NMC rules for MBBS abroad are designed to ensure that the medical training received in foreign universities is equivalent to the standards of Indian medical colleges. To ensure MBBS in Kazakhstan recognition in India, students must fulfill these requirements:

  • Course Duration: The primary medical qualification must have a minimum duration of 54 months (4.5 years) of theoretical and clinical study.

  • Mandatory Internship: Students must complete a 12-month internship in the same foreign medical institution where they were enrolled for the primary qualification. This internship must be part of the curriculum and not a separate post-graduate requirement.

  • Medium of Instruction: The entire medical course, including examinations and clinical training, must be conducted strictly in English.

  • Registration in Kazakhstan: Graduates must be eligible to register as a medical practitioner in Kazakhstan (the host country) under terms equal to those for local citizens.

  • 10-Year Completion Window: The entire MBBS journey, including the foreign internship, must be completed within 10 years from the date of enrollment.

  • No University Transfers: The NMC does not recognize degrees where the student has transferred from one medical university to another during the course of study.

List of MCI Approved Medical Universities in Kazakhstan

While the "MCI Approved" list is a legacy term, it now refers to universities listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS) that comply with current NMC norms. Choosing an established institution is vital for maintaining MBBS in Kazakhstan recognition in India.

Some of the leading universities that typically align with these standards include:

  • Al-Farabi Kazakh National University: A top-ranked university in Almaty known for strong research and global academic reputation.

  • Asfendiyarov Kazakh National Medical University: One of the oldest and most prestigious government medical universities in Kazakhstan.

  • Astana Medical University: Located in the capital city with modern infrastructure and quality clinical training.

  • Caspian International School of Medicine: A popular private medical school offering affordable MBBS education in English medium.

  • Kazakh-Russian Medical University: Known for bilingual (Russian + English) teaching and decent clinical exposure.

  • Kokshetau State University: A budget-friendly option with basic medical training facilities for international students.

  • West Kazakhstan State Medical University: Famous for low fees and strong practical-based medical education.

Licensing Exams: FMGE and NEXT Exam for MBBS Abroad Students

Securing a degree is only the first step. To obtain a permanent license to practice in India, foreign medical graduates (FMGs) must clear national-level screening tests.

FMGE after MBBS in Kazakhstan

Currently, all graduates must pass the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE). This screening test, conducted by the National Board of Examinations (NBE), is mandatory for registration with the State Medical Council. To pass, candidates must secure at least 50% marks.

NEXT Exam for MBBS Abroad Students

The NMC is transitioning to a unified licensing exam called the National Exit Test (NExT). Once fully implemented, the NExT exam for MBBS abroad students will replace FMGE and serve as:

  1. NExT Step 1: A centralized theory exam for medical licensing and PG entrance.

  2. NExT Step 2: A practical/clinical examination to ensure hands-on clinical proficiency after the internship.
