Gourav Kumar’s UGC NET journey was not defined by a single attempt or a straightforward preparation path. Coming from a Hindi-medium background in Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh, he initially struggled with English while preparing for competitive exams. After completing his B.Ed. and M.A. in Education and entering the field of NET and PhD preparation, he gradually built a strategy around consistent study, repeated revision and overcoming the language barrier.

After completing his schooling, B.A., B.Ed. and M.A., Gourav became increasingly connected with the Education subject. He also enrolled in a PhD programme, making JRF an especially relevant goal for his academic journey.

Once Gaurav became more comfortable with the preparation process, consistency became an important part of his routine. He followed recorded classes rather than depending on a fixed live-class schedule and managed his preparation alongside his PhD coursework.

Explaining his approach, he said:

“Ma'am mera lagbhag saat hour ka to rehta hi tha, aur main kabhi bhi — main aapko bataun maine kabhi bhi koi live class join nahi ki, main kabhi live class join nahi karta tha aur main bilkul aaram se jab class ho jaati thi uske baad join karta tha, aaram se use dekhta tha.”

His approach also included dealing with backlogs without allowing them to become a source of pressure. Rather than treating a missed class as a major setback, he focused on covering the pending content and returning to the planned preparation.

For Gaurav, the key was to follow the preparation path consistently and return to the basics whenever needed.

How PW Helped Gourav Kumar Strengthen His Preparation

PW became a part of Gaurav’s preparation through its classes, PYQ resources and topic-focused guidance. He particularly relied on questions covered in classes over the previous two to three years and used the PYQ book for repeated practice.

He explained:

“Ji ma'am resources ye hai ki aapne ab tak jo do-teen years mein jo question karaaye hain, maine unko time par baar-baar kiya hai, aur aapki book jo PYQ ki aapne jo abhi book nikaali thi uska fourth edition shaayad wo maine mangwaaya hua tha usko maine kiya.”

The preparation was not limited to simply watching lectures. Gaurav repeatedly worked through questions and maintained his own notes. Even when English made some questions difficult initially, he continued working through them and retained the important concepts and keywords.

This resource-based and repetitive approach helped him build greater familiarity with the language and subject matter over time.

Gaurav Kumar’s Strategy for Overcoming the Language Barrier

One of the most important changes in Gaurav’s preparation was his approach to English. Instead of trying to become completely fluent, he focused on understanding and retaining the keywords required for the examination.

He shared:

“Ma'am actually wo jo English hoti hai na aap usko is tarike se prepare karke rakhte hain, to mera maanna to ye hai main specially ye bolunga ki jab bahut zyada English ho jaati hai usi time patience thoda patience rakho, wahi cheez aap dobara bataati hai phir wo Hindi mein aa jaati hai aur apna kaam hai ma'am humein koi English mein award nahi dena hai, apna sirf itna sa hai ki keyword daalna hai.”

Gaurav gradually built his own keyword-based notes, first understanding concepts in Hindi and then retaining the relevant English terminology. He recognised that the transition would not happen immediately, but consistent exposure helped him become more comfortable with the language required for UGC NET.

From Sixth Attempt to JRF: Gaurav Kumar’s Result

Gaurav’s persistence eventually translated into a successful result. After five earlier attempts, he secured JRF in his sixth attempt, demonstrating how a change in approach can make a difference when preparation is sustained over time.

His experience also highlights the importance of patience during online preparation. When a topic did not make sense immediately, he chose to continue rather than abandon it.

As Gaurav put it:

“Sabse zaroori cheez ma'am main ye kehna chaahunga ki jaise hum kai baar class dekh rahe hain koi cheez samajh nahi aa rahi hai to thoda sa patience, thoda sa patience, kyunki next minute pe wo cheez dobara aa rahi hoti hai, thoda sa bas thoda sa patient chahiye hota hai.”

For aspirants, his journey shows that repeated attempts do not necessarily indicate a lack of ability. Identifying the obstacle, changing the approach and staying consistent can gradually turn earlier difficulties into progress.
