Gallantry Awards 2026 honour exceptional courage, bravery, and self-sacrifice displayed by personnel of the Armed Forces, other lawfully constituted forces, and civilians in India. Instituted by the Government of India, these awards recognize acts of valour both in the face of the enemy and otherwise than in the face of the enemy. Gallantry awards are announced twice every year on the occasions of Republic Day and Independence Day.
On the eve of the 77th Republic Day, the President of India approved 70 Gallantry Awards 2026, acknowledging extraordinary service and heroism across the Indian Army, Navy, Air Force, and other forces. These awards continue India’s long tradition of celebrating bravery and national service.
Indian Army Gallantry Awards 2026 form a major share of the honours announced this year. Officers and personnel from elite units such as Para (SF), Assam Rifles, Rashtriya Rifles, and infantry regiments were recognised for exceptional courage during high-risk operations.
Indian Army personnel were awarded honours across multiple categories including Shaurya Chakra, Sena Medal (Gallantry), and Bar to Sena Medal. These awards highlight the Army’s continuous commitment to safeguarding national security, often under extreme and life-threatening conditions.
Gallantry Awards in India are classified into two main categories, depending on whether the act of bravery occurred in the face of the enemy or otherwise.
Gallantry in the Face of Enemy: Acts of valour during combat or war-like situations.
Gallantry Other Than in the Face of Enemy: Acts of bravery during peacetime or internal security operations.

India has a total of six Gallantry Awards, instituted by the Government of India to recognise acts of exceptional bravery, courage, and self-sacrifice. All gallantry awards may also be awarded posthumously, highlighting the nation’s respect for supreme sacrifice.
The six gallantry awards are classified into two categories based on the nature of the act of bravery. Gallantry in the face of the enemy includes the Param Vir Chakra, Mahavir Chakra, and Vir Chakra, which are awarded for acts of valour during war or armed conflict. Gallantry other than in the face of the enemy includes the Ashok Chakra, Kirti Chakra, and Shaurya Chakra, which recognise heroic acts during peacetime operations such as counter-terrorism, internal security, and rescue missions. Together, these awards represent the highest honours for bravery in India.
