The INSPIRE Scheme (Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research) is a flagship program launched by the Department of Science and Technology (DST). It is designed to attract young talent to the excitement of creative pursuit of science, beginning at an early age.
Unlike traditional scholarship programs, the INSPIRE Scheme India does not conduct competitive exams for selection; instead, it relies on the existing educational system's performance for talent identification.
The INSPIRE Scheme vision is to strengthen the national Science & Technology base by creating a pipeline of skilled researchers. The program is divided into three key components, each targeting a specific age group and educational level.

The primary INSPIRE Scheme goal is to communicate to the youth of the country the creative pursuits of science. Key INSPIRE Scheme objectives include:
Attracting Talent: Encouraging students to choose science as a career path at an early stage.
Building R&D Base: Expanding the research and development base of the country.
Innovation: Promoting the INSPIRE MANAK scheme to foster a culture of innovation among school children.
The INSPIRE Scheme purpose is fulfilled through three integrated programs:
This component aims to attract talented youth by providing an INSPIRE internship programme and awards.
INSPIRE Award – MANAK: This component targets students aged 10–17 years (Classes VI to XII). One million young innovators are targeted from schools across the country. Selected students receive a financial award of ₹10,000 to develop their original ideas into projects.
INSPIRE Internship: Summer and winter camps for top 1% performers in Class X board exams to interact with global science leaders and Nobel Laureates.
The INSPIRE scholarship for higher education (SHE) targets students aged 17–22 years.
Capacity: 12,000 scholarships are awarded annually.
Financial Support: Scholars receive ₹80,000 per annum (₹60,000 as cash and ₹20,000 as a summer mentorship grant).
Eligibility: Students must be pursuing undergraduate (B.Sc., B.S., Int. M.Sc./M.S.) levels in natural and basic sciences and be among the top 1% of their respective Class XII boards.
This program focuses on long-term research career encouragement.
INSPIRE Fellowship details: Provides 1,000 fellowships annually for doctoral research (Ph.D.). It is equivalent to the NET JRF/SRF fellowships.
INSPIRE Faculty Fellowship India: Offers post-doctoral positions for young researchers (aged 27-32) to establish themselves as independent investigators. It provides a monthly remuneration of ₹1,25,000 and a significant research grant.
The INSPIRE Scheme highlights its unique approach to talent engagement:
No Entrance Exams: Selection is based on board exam results and university rankings, reducing the pressure of competitive testing.
Broad Scope: Covers the entire spectrum of science education from school (Class VI) to post-doctoral levels.
Financial Support: Provides significant investment in the form of monthly stipends and annual research grants to ensure financial constraints do not hinder scientific growth.
