The National Games of India began in 1924 in the undivided Lahore inspired by the spirit of the 1920s Olympic movement. Initially held irregularly, the Games became more regular after 1940. Lucknow hosted the first National Games after independence, while the first National Games modeled after the Olympics were held in 1985 in New Delhi.
