Tatya Tope Biography

Tatya Tope was born in Yeola in the Nashik region. Different sources give the year of his birth either as 1814 or 1820. While little is known about his childhood, he served under the Maratha Peshwa Bajirao II before coming into contact with Nana Sahib. His real name was Ramachandra Pandurang Tope. “Tatya” or “Tantia” was a nickname meaning “uncle” in Marathi.
