About the International Junior Science Olympiad (INJSO)

  • Overview: The IJSO is a prestigious annual individual and team competition in the Natural Sciences (Physics, Chemistry, and Biology) for young students.

  • Eligibility: Students must be 15 years old or younger as of December 31st of the competition year (typically catering to students in grades 8, 9, and 10).

  • Exam Level: Students face class 11th and 12th tricky Science-based questions in the INJSO Olympiad. High conceptual depth is required to solve the Physics and Chemistry questions with analytical and conceptual knowledge.
  • Global Scale: It brings together bright young minds from over 50 to 70 countries to foster an early interest in science, critical thinking, and international networking.

  • The Final Event: The international finale lasts about 9 days, hosted by a different member country each year, and consists of three distinct 3-to-4-hour exams:

    • Multiple Choice Examination: 30 advanced MCQs (10 each for Physics, Chemistry, and Biology).

    • Theoretical Examination: In-depth, analytical, and descriptive multi-disciplinary problems.

    • Experimental/Practical Examination: A laboratory-based test performed in teams of three that requires high-level data handling and integration of all three sciences.

How are students' selections made for INJSO?

While the exact preliminary rounds can vary slightly depending on your home country, the standard national funnel (using the highly structured Indian NSEJS route as a prime example) follows these stages:

  • Stage 1: National Standard Examination (e.g., NSEJS): Thousands of students nationwide sit for a highly competitive regional/national written exam. The top ~300 scoring students are shortlisted.

  • Stage 2: National Junior Science Olympiad (e.g., INJSO): The shortlisted students take a much harder, descriptive national-level exam. Only the top ~35 students nationwide secure a spot for the next round.

  • Stage 3: Orientation-cum-Selection Camp (OCSC): These 35 students spend 2–3 weeks at a premier national scientific institution (like the HBCSE in India). They undergo rigorous conceptual training and face strict theoretical and experimental assessments.

  • Stage 4: Pre-Departure Training (PDT): Out of the camp, the top 6 final students are selected to form the official National Team. They undergo intensive training to master advanced laboratory equipment and experimental design.

  • Stage 5: International Participation: The official 6-student delegation travels to the host country to represent their nation at the global IJSO event.

Inspiration for Future Students

Students who have an interest in science and related subjects. They should focus on the early preparation and revision to strengthen their conceptual knowledge in the preparation journey of the olympiads like IJSO. Regular participation in the national and international olympiads helps students develop their interests in Science. They get to know discoveries related to Science around them in the world.
