SSC JE Notification 2026 Major Changes: The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) has released the SSC JE Notification 2026 with several important changes from the 2025 notification. This time, the tentative vacancies have been announced 1748 posts in 14 organisations.  The new notification includes more vacancies, new posts, more departments, changes in the syllabus, and a new role for Paper 1 in the selection process.

 Big news for JE aspirants and paper 1 is qualifying in nature. Keep the focus on the two papers, i.e., Paper 1 and Paper 2, to secure a place in the merit list. Paper 2 marks will be counted in preparing the JE final merit list. 

Candidates preparing for the SSC Junior Engineer exam should understand these changes before starting their preparation. Here are the major changes in the SSC JE 2026 Notification.

SSC JE 2026 vs 2025: Key Changes at a Glance

SSC has provided the SSC JE 2026 recruitment notification to fill 1748 Junior Engineer posts in 14 organisations. Candidates should know that this time the vacancies and departments have been increased in the JE recruitment. Only the marks of Paper 2 are included in the final merit list. New subjects added are CS/IT, E&T, Physics, and Telecom. 

SSC JE 2026 Vacancy Increased

One of the biggest changes is the increase in vacancies.

In 2025, SSC announced 1,340 tentative vacancies. For 2026, the number has increased to 1,748 tentative vacancies.

This means there are 408 more vacancies in 2026 than in 2025. The increase is around 30%.

However, the vacancies are tentative. The number may change. 

New Posts Added in SSC JE 2026

The SSC JE exam has been expanded in 2026. Earlier, the exam mainly covered Civil, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering posts.

The 2026 notification includes some new posts, such as:

• Junior Engineer Telecom

• Scientific Assistant in the India Meteorological Department

• Junior Engineer Civil and Electrical under the Director General of Lighthouses & Lightships

• Junior Engineer Civil under the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying

This means candidates now have more post options, depending on their educational qualifications.

More Departments Are Included

The number of organisations covered by the SSC JE recruitment has also increased.

The 2025 notification covered around 9 organisations, while the 2026 notification includes 14 organisations.

The addition of new departments gives eligible candidates more opportunities. However, candidates should carefully check the qualification and age requirements for each post before applying.

Paper 1 Is Now Qualifying in Nature

Paper 1 is now qualifying in nature is one of the most important changes in the SSC JE 2026 selection process.

In 2025, marks scored in both Paper 1 and Paper 2 were used for final selection.

In 2026, Paper 1 is qualifying in nature. Its marks will be used to shortlist candidates for Paper 2, but Paper 1 marks will not be added to the final merit score.

The selection process can be understood as:

Paper 1 → Shortlisting → Paper 2 → Final Merit

Therefore, candidates must still clear Paper 1, but the marks scored in Paper 1 will not decide the final rank.

Paper 2 Will Decide Final Merit

In SSC JE 2026, Paper 2 becomes very important because its marks will be used for final merit.

Paper 1 carries 200 marks, while Paper 2 carries 300 marks. The maximum marks of the papers have not changed.

The major change is how these marks are used.

In 2025:

Paper 1 + Paper 2 = Final Merit

In 2026:

Paper 1 = Qualifying/Shortlisting

Paper 2 = Final Merit

Candidates should give strong attention to Paper 2 preparation because it will play the main role in final selection.

SSC JE 2026 Syllabus Has Expanded

The syllabus is another major area of change.

In 2025, the engineering syllabus mainly covered Civil, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering.

In 2026, the notification also includes subjects such as:

• Computer Science and Information Technology

• Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering

• Physics

• Telecommunication

These new subjects are important for candidates applying for the newly added posts.

The 2026 notification also gives a more detailed syllabus for existing Civil, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering subjects.

For example, the Civil Engineering syllabus includes areas such as Engineering Mechanics, Solid Mechanics, Structural Analysis, Construction Materials and Management, Concrete Structures, Steel Structures, Surveying, Soil Mechanics, Fluid Mechanics, Environmental Engineering and Transportation.

Candidates should therefore check the latest syllabus instead of following the 2025 syllabus without changes.

New Subjects Have Different Levels

The new subjects also have an important difference in their level.

Civil, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering questions are approximately at the Diploma level.

For Computer Science and Information Technology, Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering, Physics and Telecommunication, the standard is approximately at the graduation level.

Candidates applying for these subjects should prepare according to the latest syllabus and required level.

SSC JE 2026 Age Cut Off Date Changed

SSC JE general age limit has not been increased. The maximum age remains 30 years for most posts, while some posts have a maximum age of 32 years.

However, the age calculation date has changed.

For SSC JE 2025, the age was calculated as on January 1, 2026.

For SSC JE 2026, the age is calculated as on August 1, 2026.

Therefore, candidates should check their date of birth carefully according to the 2026 notification.

The change should not be described as an increase in the SSC JE age limit. It is a change in the age reckoning date.

SSC JE 2026 Application Form Has New Options

The application process remains mostly similar, but some details in the form have changed because new posts have been added.

Candidates may need to select the relevant post, qualification level and subject. Some candidates may also have an option to apply for JE Telecom based on their qualifications.

Therefore, candidates should read the post and qualification details carefully before submitting the application form.

Important Dates Have Changed

The recruitment schedule has also moved compared with 2025.

For SSC JE 2026, applications are scheduled from September 2 to September 22, 2026.

Paper 1 is scheduled for October/November 2026, while Paper 2 is scheduled for December 2026.

Candidates should check the official SSC website for any later changes in the examination schedule.

EWS Certificate Details Updated

The financial year for the EWS Income and Asset Certificate has also been updated.

For SSC JE 2025, the certificate was related to FY 2025–26, based on income for FY 2024–25.

For SSC JE 2026, the certificate should be valid for FY 2026–27, based on income for FY 2025–26.

Candidates applying under the EWS category should use the certificate as required in the latest notification.

What Has Not Changed in SSC JE 2026?

Not every part of the recruitment has changed.

Some important details remain the same, including:

• Application fee of ₹100

• First application correction charge of ₹200

• Second correction charge of ₹500

• Two-paper computer-based examination

• Paper 1 carrying 200 marks

• Paper 2 carrying 300 marks

• OTR facility

• Aadhaar-based authentication

• Real-time photograph during application

Therefore, these should not be presented as new features of the 2026 notification.
