Moving from a BTech background to CFA Level 1 brought a different set of challenges for Ayesh Das. With no prior academic background in finance, he had to understand unfamiliar financial terminology and theory-heavy subjects while also managing his final-semester BTech studies. Starting with limited focused study time, he needed to build his understanding and gradually increase his preparation before the August 2026 examination.
Physics Wallah helped Ayesh manage this transition through CFA classes, DPPs, doubt support, practice questions and mock tests. He also used the CFA practice material alongside his PW preparation to strengthen his concepts and question-solving approach. By becoming more consistent after his semester exams and increasing his question practice in the final month, Ayesh cleared CFA Level 1 with 1660/1900 marks in August 2026.
Ayesh’s transition from BTech to CFA Level 1 was challenging because he came from a non-finance background. His Mathematics background helped with some quantitative subjects, while theory-heavy areas required more effort.
“Mera background finance ka nahi tha, toh starting mein thoda difficult raha because CFA ka vast syllabus hai. But I was a good student of Mathematics, toh thoda concepts ka zyada clarity aa raha tha.”
He found Quantitative Methods and Fixed Income comparatively comfortable, but struggled more with theory-based subjects.
“Quant and Fixed Income mein mujhe utna difficult nahi hua. But theory wale subjects, like Equity and Corporate Issuers, inmein thodi difficulty rahi.”
This difference helped Ayesh identify the subjects that needed more attention as he continued with his CFA Level 1 preparation.
Ayesh started preparing in February while he was still in the final semester of his BTech. Initially, he kept the preparation relatively light and mainly focused on attending lectures.
“Mera BTech ka last semester tha, toh main February se preparation start kar diya tha. But us time thoda lightly preparation chal raha tha. Normal lectures dekhta tha aur notes utna nahi banata tha.”
His preparation became much more intensive after his semester examinations ended in May and June. With the August exam approaching, he shifted his focus towards completing the syllabus and practising questions.
“May end aur June mein hamara semester exam khatam hua. Uske baad maine full-on preparation start kar diya August ke liye.”
The final two to two-and-a-half months became the main phase of his preparation. During this period, he followed the lectures more seriously and focused on notes, practice and revision.
“Last do-dhai months mein zyada tar padhai kiya hoon. Usmein proper notes aur strategy ko bhi bahut zyada follow kiya.”
As the exam came closer, Ayesh increased his question practice, particularly during the final month.
“Last ek month toh maine zyada question practice karne mein use kiya tha.”
This gradual shift from lighter preparation to intensive study allowed him to manage CFA preparation alongside his final-semester BTech commitments.
Physics Wallah was part of Ayesh’s preparation as he worked through CFA Level 1 alongside his final-semester BTech studies. He joined the CFA online coaching programme for his August 2026 preparation and used the classes, practice resources and support available during his preparation.
“DPP kar raha tha, but us time shuruat mein thoda kam kar raha tha. Mujhe Maths mein thoda interest tha, toh Quant aur Fixed Income ka DPP solve karne mein mujhe thoda achha lagta tha.”
When Ayesh faced doubts during the classes, he used the available support to clarify them rather than leaving them unresolved.
“Haan, main message bhejta tha us particular session mein.”
The CFA batches also provide access to CFA-focused learning options, while Ayesh specifically recalled using a dedicated calculator session to become familiar with the BA II Plus.
“Calculator kaise use karna hai, toh ek video tha poora calculator ka, ek ghanta, dedh ghanta ke aas-paas. Toh woh poora maine dekha tha, toh usmein poora samajh gaya tha calculator ka har ek function.”
Mock tests were another part of his Physics Wallah preparation. He attempted three PW mocks and found them useful for improving his conceptual clarity.
“PW ka jo last mein mock tha, mock mein teen mock diya tha PW se aur CFA ka do mock diya tha. I think ki mujhe zyada mock conceptual clarity dene mein help kiya.”
These classes, DPPs, doubt support, calculator guidance and mock tests helped Ayesh strengthen his preparation as the examination approached.
After months of balancing BTech studies with CFA preparation, the final result marked an important achievement. Coming from a non-finance background, the preparation involved building concepts from the basics, practising questions regularly and becoming more consistent in the final months.
The confidence gained through mock tests also helped during the examination. Ayesh was able to complete the paper before the allotted time and used the remaining time to review flagged questions.
“Mera exam do hours fifteen minutes ka session tha, toh usse pehle hi finish ho gaya tha. Do ghante mein hi mera finish ho gaya tha.”
This experience was followed by a score of 1660/1900 marks, resulting in a first-attempt CFA Level 1 clearance in August 2026. The achievement highlights how a learner from a BTech background can take on a finance-focused qualification by combining consistent preparation, question practice and the right learning support.
The CFA Level 1 journey shows the importance of gradually increasing preparation, especially when moving into a new academic field. Starting alongside his final-semester BTech studies and becoming more focused after his semester exams, the preparation included Physics Wallah classes, DPPs, doubt support and mock tests, along with CFA practice material. The final score of 1660/1900 reflects the effort put into strengthening concepts and increasing question practice before the examination.
