Disease of Poultry
Common are: Fowl pox, Ranikhet disease (New Castle disease), Coryza, Fowl cholera, Aspergillosis.
Controlled by timely vaccination, proper housing and nutrition.
Ducks
Constitutes 6% of the total poultry count in India, mainly in Southern and Eastern parts. Out of 20 breeds common are:
Indigenous - Indian Runner, Sylhet, Meta, Brown and White geese
Exotic - Muscori, Pekin, Aylesbury and Campbell.
Turkey (Meleagris)
Most recently domesticated these are meak and gentle creature.
The meat yield is very high grows upto 5.6 kg. weight
Breeds are Narfold, British white, Broad breasted bronze, Beltsville and Small white.
Poultry Diseases
Encephalomalacia : Deficiency of vitamin E causes softening of brain tissue in young poultry.
Coccidiosis : The protozoan Eimeria causes coccidiosis in fowls. It causes bloody diarrhoea.
