Structure Of Local Government In Rural Area

• Local government in rural area is popularly called Panchayati Raj.
• Under this system each village or a group of village is grouped into Gram Sabha.
• The adults of the Gram Sabha elect a council consisting of Panch and a president called sarpanch.
• The council is the decision making body and it works under the overall supervision of the Gram sabha.
• The Panchayat (Council) meets at last twice a month to approve the annual budget and to review the performance of gram Panchayat.
• At the next level of gram Panchayat, Gram Sabha/ Panchyats are grouped together to form Panchayat Samiti or block or Mandal.
• Member of the block is elected by all the Panchyat members.
• At the highest level all panchayat samitis of a district is grouped together to form Zilla (district) parishad.
• Most of the members of zilla parishad are elected as M.P. and MLA of that district and some other officials are its member.
• Chairperson of zilla parishad is the political head of zilla parishad.
