‘Integer’ is derived from the Latin word whole or intact. Therefore, integers are whole numbers consisting of positive or negative numbers or zero, called a combination of negative and whole numbers. Integers can never be fractional or decimal numbers. Generally, a set of integers is represented by Z.
Eg, Z = { -7, -2, 0, 3, 9}
Addition and Subtraction of Integers
Learning to add and subtract integers is very important to do simple math in everyday life to do a simple calculation. Like calculating the pocket money, you spend per day. Calculates the ratio between the among integers.
Multiplication of Integers
Multiplication is an easy thing for most of you. However, it is essential to pay attention to the number symbol when multiplying the numbers. This will be very helpful while simplifying the calculation.
Multiplication of a Positive and Negative Integer
Multiplication of positive and negative numbers will always leave the answer as a negative number.
Multiplication of Two Negative Integers
Multiplying two negative numbers will always lead to a positive number. It would help if you kept note of this article while simplifying the quadratic equation.
Solved Examples
Q1. If x + (-62) = -121, then the value of x will be
- -183
- -59
- 59
- 183
Ans. Correct answer is 2
Explanation: x + (-62) = -121 or x – 62 = -121
or x = -121 + 62 = -59.
Q2. If 42 = -6a, then the value of a will be
- –6
- -7
- -8
- -9
Ans. Correct answer is 2
Explanation: 42 = -6a
or -6a = 42
or a = 42/(-6)= -7.
Q3. The ascending order of 45, -29, 21, -45 and 23 is
- -45, -29, 21, 23, 45
- 21, 23, 45, –45, -29
- 21, 23, -29, 45, -45
- 45, 23, 21, -29, -45
Ans. Correct answer is 1
Explanation: Ascending order means arranging the numbers from the smallest to the greatest.
Q4. The descending order of -5, -17, 10, -14 and 2 is
- 10, 2, -5, -14, -17
- -17, -14, -5, 2, 10
- -5, -14, -17, 2, 10
- 2, 10, -5, -14, -17
Ans. Correct answer is 1
Explanation: Descending order means arranging the numbers from the greatest to the smallest.
Q5. On simplification of the arithmetic expression
(3 x 60) + (3 x 0), we get
- 0
- 80
- 175
- 180
Ans. Correct answer is 4
Explanation: (3 x 60) + (3 x 0) = 180 + 0 = 180.
Q6. After simplification of the arithmetic expression
(2 x 20) + (2 x 4), we get
- 5
- 40
- 48
- 100
Ans. Correct answer is 3
Explanation: (2 x 20) + (2 x 4) = 40 + 8 = 48.
