Unemployment and Employment Generation

The phrase "unemployment" is frequently used to describe those who are "out of work." From an economic perspective, everyone who is willing and able to work but is unable to find a job is considered unemployed. This comprises the group of people who, due to a lack of a job, declare a willingness to work and look for work through relatives, close associates, and other contacts.

The whole state of the economy and society is impacted by joblessness. An individual's likelihood of experiencing bad outcomes and adding to the multiplier impact that unemployment has on the community increases with the length of their unemployment.

What is Employment and Unemployment?

A person is seen as employed when they are actively involved in a business, trade, profession, or job. Those who are actively seeking employment but are not yet employed are considered without employment. Macroeconomic objectives for every government include reducing the unemployment rate and finding a solution to the employment-related issue.

Unemployment Rate Formula

The following are the three main official sources of information about employment in India: The Directorate General of Employment and Training Data of Registration with Employment Exchanges, National Sample Survey Organization, Census of India We calculate it using the formula below: (Number of Unemployed / Total Labor Force) x 100 = Unemployment Rate In this context, "labor force" refers to all those who are able and willing to work or participate in productive activities.

What Leads to Unemployment?

The list of some of the most frequent reasons for joblessness in India is shown below.
  • There is a sharp increase in population compared to the number of available jobs.
  • A very low pace of economic growth that is unable to keep up with the growing workforce.
  • Inadequate infrastructure and necessary funding for lagging industries.
  • AI and smart technologies have reduced the need for human resources that were previously used for certain jobs.
  • Lack of industry-specific knowledge resulting from school and college curriculum that is irrelevant to the sectors in question.

Main Reasons for Unemployment

The main cause of unemployment is the current state of the world economy. The ongoing global economic crisis is one of the main reasons for unemployment, among the numerous other variables that also have a role. International trade has been significantly impacted by the economic crisis. Previously prosperous nations have not been able to be kept back by economic tragedy. It goes without saying that we live in a highly technologically advanced period due to a multitude of technical developments. In the past, companies needed a lot of labor to finish their jobs. However, due to advancements in technology, computers and other technologies can now do even the most challenging jobs in a matter of minutes. Moreover, it used to take hours to send a single message or reply just a few years ago. Specialized jobs are becoming increasingly common, and large companies provide their employees with a variety of benefits. They have so many standards for employing staff, mostly for this reason. If an applicant doesn't satisfy all the requirements, they won't even be considered for the current position. Due to the increased level of complexity and specialization in job descriptions, many are finding it extremely difficult to even secure an interview.

Different Types of Unemployment

There are many types of unemployment, a few of them are mentioned below:

Educated

The most terrible form of unemployment is that which occurs when young people with education cannot find suitable jobs that fit their qualifications. Over time, as education has improved, the number of skilled workers has grown, but not at the same rate as the number of open positions. This leads to unemployment among educated people.

Temporary

In this instance, employees are unemployed for a specific season. Workers engaged just for the harvest season, for instance, do not have a job for the majority of the year. Alternatively, if the sector is seasonal in nature, people will inherently lose their jobs during the off-season.

Urban

Over time, there has been a significant increase in the unemployment rate in metropolitan regions. Generally, unemployment exchange boards keep track of the number of jobless people living in cities.

Industrial

This group includes illiterate people who are eager and able to work in urban factories or other businesses but are unable to obtain employment. Urban unemployment rises in combination with rural-urban migration.

Rural

The majority of people in India live in rural areas—about 70% of them. The rural population's primary source of income is agriculture. However, there isn't enough work to go around for everyone who lives in rural regions. This results in unemployment that occurs in three kinds: seasonal, open, and covert.

Open

This is a reference to the state of affairs in rural places when those who are genuinely able and want to work are unable to obtain employment.

Disguised

This is especially problematic for the rural Indian environment. In this instance, the farm employs more people than is necessary, and not all of them are actively contributing to the production of goods. As a result, many workers' marginal physical productivity is zero. When almost the entire family works on the farm, this occurs.

Technological

Every time there is a technological advancement, and the current workforce cannot keep up, there is this kind of unemployment. When employed people's skill sets do not align with the demands of emerging technologies and they are unable to adjust, they lose their jobs.
