What Happens If I Score 60% in Three Subjects of Module 1 in CS Executive Exam?

The CS Executive exam, administered by the Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI), is a significant milestone for aspiring company secretaries. It’s a rigorous test that demands a deep understanding of various subjects, divided into two modules. Each module has four subjects; passing them is an important step towards becoming a certified company secretary. But what happens if you score 60% in three of the four subjects in Module 1? Let’s explore the implications, benefits, and next steps here.

CS Executive Exam Overview

The CS Executive is a 9-month course that is the second step towards becoming a company secretary. It is designed for students who have either completed the CS Foundation or hold an undergraduate degree and those who have passed the final level of ICMAI or ICAI. The course covers a comprehensive syllabus divided into two modules, focusing on key areas such as corporate law, business management, and financial strategy. The ICSI CS Executive December 2024 exam is scheduled from December 21 to December 30 . The other important details regarding this exam are discussed in the table below:

A student must complete the executive and professional exams within the registration period. However, they can renew or extend their registration by paying the required fees if they meet the relevant guidelines.

CS Executive Exemption Rule

The CS Executive exam offers exemptions for certain papers if a candidate has specific qualifications and meets the required criteria. Here's a brief overview of the exemption rules:
  • Industrial, Labour, and General Laws : If you have an M.A./M.B.A. in Corporate Secretaryship or a Law degree (three or five years) from a recognized university, you can apply for an exemption from this paper, provided you scored 50% or more in the aggregate.
  • Cost and Management Accounting : You can get an exemption from this paper if you have an M.A. in Corporate Secretaryship, M.Com., or an M.B.A. with Advanced Accountancy at the undergraduate level and Cost/Management Accounting or Financial Management at the postgraduate level, with at least 50% in the relevant subject.
  • Tax Laws and Practice : An M.A. or M.B.A. in Corporate Secretaryship qualifies you for an exemption from this paper.
If you've passed the final examination of the Institute of Cost Accountants of India (ICAI-CMA), you can be exempted from the following CS executive papers:
  • Cost and Management Accounting
  • Tax Laws and Practice
  • Company accounts and auditing practices

What Happens If You Score 60% in Three Subjects of Module 1 in the CS Executive Exam?

If you score 60% or more in three subjects of Module 1 (out of four subjects) in the CS Executive exam and score at least 25 marks in the remaining paper, you become eligible for an exemption. This means you won't have to reappear for those three subjects in future exams. However, to pass Module 1, you must score at least 40% in the fourth subject and maintain an aggregate of 50% across all four subjects. If these conditions are met, you will successfully pass Module 1 and move forward to becoming a company secretary.  You must retake the necessary papers to complete the module without fulfilling these requirements.

Benefits of the CS Executive Exemption Rule

The CS Executive exemption rule offers significant advantages for candidates by streamlining the examination process and acknowledging prior academic achievements. Here are the key benefits:
  • Time-saving : By exempting certain papers, candidates can focus on fewer subjects and reduce the time needed to prepare for exams.
  • Reduced Exam Stress : With fewer subjects to study, candidates experience less stress and can concentrate better on the remaining papers.
  • Recognition of Prior Learning : The exemption rule rewards candidates who have already acquired relevant qualifications and recognizes their expertise while reducing redundancy in their studies.
  • Cost Efficiency : Fewer exams mean lower costs associated with exam fees and study materials, making the certification process more affordable.
  • Faster Progression : Exemptions enable candidates to move through the CS Executive course more quickly and accelerate their journey toward becoming a company secretary.
By taking advantage of these exemptions, candidates can enjoy a smoother and more efficient path to certification and achieve their professional goals more easily.

Strategies for CS Executive Success

Achieving the required minimum of 40% in each paper and a 50% aggregate across all subjects in a single sitting for the CS Executive exam requires a strategic approach. Here are some effective strategies to help you meet these goals:
  • Begin by gaining a clear understanding of the entire syllabus for each paper. Identify the key areas that carry the most weight and focus on mastering these topics. Knowing what to expect will help you allocate your study time more effectively.
  • Develop a comprehensive study plan that covers all subjects and papers. Allocate more time to subjects where you feel less confident while ensuring you maintain steady progress in areas where you are stronger. Stick to this plan consistently to avoid last-minute cramming.
  • Instead of rote memorization, focus on understanding the underlying concepts in each subject. This approach will help you tackle application-based questions more effectively and improve your performance.
  • Make revision a regular part of your study routine. Revisiting topics frequently ensures that the information stays fresh in your mind and reduces the chances of forgetting important details during the exam.
  • During the exam, manage your time wisely. Allocate a specific amount of time to each question and move on if you get stuck. Prioritize questions you can answer confidently to secure the necessary marks.
  • Exam stress can hinder your performance, so staying calm and focused is essential. Practice relaxation techniques like deep breathing or meditation to avoid anxiety and maintain concentration during the exam.
  • If you encounter difficulties in certain subjects, don’t hesitate to seek guidance from mentors, teachers, or peers. Clarifying doubts early on can prevent misunderstandings and ensure you are well-prepared.
  • Finally, ensure you maintain a healthy balance between study and rest. Overworking can lead to burnout, so take regular breaks and get sufficient sleep to keep your mind sharp and ready for the exam.

The Importance of a Balanced Approach in the CS Executive Exam

While the exemption rule is beneficial, it’s important to maintain a balanced approach. Don’t become complacent with the subjects you’ve already cleared. Although you’re exempt from reappearing in them, thoroughly understanding all subjects is crucial for your overall knowledge and future career as a company secretary. Additionally, remember that passing the CS Executive exam is just one step in the journey. Your ultimate goal is to become a skilled and knowledgeable company secretary.  Therefore, use this opportunity to build a strong foundation in all subjects, including where you need a minimum of 40% in each paper and a 50% aggregate across all subjects.
