CUET UG 2024, UGC Allowed Admissions Twice A Year, Reasons And Beneficiaries
CUET UG Participation Universities can now admit students twice in a year in two cycles i.e., July/August and January/February for their undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD programmes.

CUET UG 2024, The University Grants Commission (UGC) has allowed universities to take admission twice a year i.e., in July/August and January/February. The UGC has said that based on the infrastructure and faculty availability of the universities they can make decisions on the admission cycle. There is no mandate to adopt the new system.
Existing Admission Process and Change
Currently, universities are admitting students once a year, in a single academic session that begins in July/August now, after UGC’s decision universities can admit students in two cycles, in July/August and then in January/February for undergraduate, postgraduate, and PhD programs. With this new system, universities can now reflect the admission cycles of the countries that admit students twice a year.Reasons and Beneficiaries
This biannual admission process has already been attempted for open and distance learning and online programmes, and found that “permitting a second academic session in a year has helped nearly half a million students join their degree programmes without waiting for one full academic year”. Students who have missed admissions in July/August due to health issues, delays in board exam results, or personal reasons can benefit from this new system. With admissions opening twice a year, they don’t need to wait for an entire year to apply again for admission. UBC chairman has said that universities from other countries follow a biannual admission system, and this system in Indian institutions “can enhance their international collaborations and student exchanges”. He has also added that this new system can help to increase the ‘gross enrollment ratio (GER). GER is the ratio of students enrolled to the population of the age group eligible for higher education.Next Step for Institutions
The academic and executive councils of the universities have to decide whether they want open admission twice a year or not. They also need to decide what programmes they might open for twice admission. Well infrastructure and availability of faculties will be the most important factors in deciding to adopt the new admission cycle. Charman Kumar said “This a provision that we are providing… It is quite possible that it will not happen immediately. The universities may have to work on their infrastructural requirements, faculty requirements, and then plan it over a period of time.” Delhi University Vice Chancellor Yogesh Singh said the universities willing to adopt the new systems may implement it initially for a few programmes before extending it to others. There are many admissions which are based on entrance exams. Chairman Kumar said that it could be beneficial to students if the exams are conducted twice a year.CUET UG FAQs
