History of Madhya Pradesh

The ancient period, the medieval period, and the contemporary period are the three periods into which Madhya Pradesh's history is separated.
  • The Nanda Empire, Maurya Empire, and Gupta Empire all ruled the area in antiquity.
  • The advent of Rajput clans, such as the Parmar and Chandela clans—the latter of which is renowned for having built the renowned Khajuraho temples—marks the medieval era.
  • During this time, the Malwa Sultanate was also in power. During the modern era, Madhya Pradesh saw the rise of the Mughal and Maratha Empires, followed by the British Empire.
  • Modern-day Madhya Pradesh included the British princely realms of Gwalior, Indore, and Bhopal. Up until India's independence in 1947, British rule persisted into the 20th century.
  • Madhya Pradesh was created in 1956, and in 2000, Chhattisgarh was separated from the state.
