According to the 2024 Environment Performance Index (EPI), India ranks 176th out of 180 nations, with an EPI score of 27.6, surpassing only Pakistan, Vietnam, Laos, and Myanmar. Key Points

  • Previously, India was placed 168th in the EPI 2020 and 180th in the EPI 2022.

Cyril Ramaphosa Re-elected as President of South Africa for 2nd Term

The South African Parliament re-elected Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa (71 years old) as President of the Republic of South Africa for a second term. Key Points
  • Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa, the President of the African National Congress (ANC), earned 283 votes in the 400-member parliament, while Julius Malema of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) received only 44.
  • For the first time in 30 years, the ANC lost its majority and received only 40% of the votes in the General Election conducted on May 29, 2024.
  • The DA, South Africa's second-largest party, received about 22% of the vote.

The newly launched mobile application, titled “ NCRB Sankalan of Criminal Laws ,” aims to serve as a comprehensive guide consolidating essential information about the upcoming legal reforms in one accessible platform.   • Designed to cater to a wide audience ranging from the general public to legal professionals, the app includes detailed compilations of three major legislations: Bharatiya Nayaya Sanhita (Indian Penal Code), Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita (Code of Criminal Procedure), and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (Indian Evidence Act).
  • It provides users with an indexed structure linking all chapters and sections of these new laws, facilitating ease of navigation and reference.

Indian Railways Enters Its Name Into Limca Book Of Records

Indian Railways has entered its name into the Limca Book of Records for most people at a public service event at multiple venues. Ministry of Railways organized an event on 26 February this year, attended by over 40.19 lakh people at over 2,000 venues. Key Points
  • The event was organized for the inauguration of road over railway bridges and for laying the foundation stones of the railway stations by Prime Minister Narendra Modi .

FIDE World Junior Chess Championships 2024

The International Chess Federation (FIDE) World Junior Chess Championships 2024 (for Open & Girls Under-20) was held at the GIFT City, Gandhinagar, Gujarat from 1st to 14th June 2024. Key Points
  • International Master (IM) Divya Deshmukh (18 years old) of India won the 2024 FIDE World Junior Chess Championships (Girls) title by defeating Bulgaria's Beloslava Krasteva in the final.
  • IM Kazybek Nogerbek (20) of Kazakhstan won the 2024 FIDE World Junior Chess Championships (Open) title after defeating Mamikon Gharibyan of Armenia in the final round.
  • This is India's first World Junior victory in 15 years. Divya of Nagpur (Maharashtra) becomes the fourth Indian girl to win the Junior title, following Koneru Humpy (2001), Dronavalli Harik (2008), and Soumya Swaminathan (2009).
