India hosted the 46th Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting and the 26th Committee on Environmental Protection in Kerala.

India successfully held the 46th Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting (ATCM-46) and the 26th Committee on Environmental Protection (CEP-26) at Kochi, Kerala, from May 20th to 30th, 2024. Key Points
  • TCM-46 was held under the theme "Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam" (a Sanskrit term meaning 'one Earth, one family, one future').
  • CEP-26, conducted from May 20th to 24th, 2024, addressed a wide range of issues and helped to execute the Environmental Protocol in Antarctica.
  • ATCM-46 and CEP-26 were hosted by the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), Government of India, via the National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR), Goa, with support from the Antarctic Treaty Secretariat.
  • During the ceremony, a personalized "MyStamp" with the ATCM-46 logo was released in collaboration with India Post.

About Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting (ATCM):

  • The ATCM and CEP are high-level global annual meetings conducted under the provisions of the Antarctic Treaty, a multilateral agreement of 56 Contracting Parties signed in 1959.
    • ATCM was generally met once every two years from 1961 to 1994 and since 1994 the meetings are held annually.

China launched Pakistan's Multi-Mission Communication Satellite (PakSAT-MM1)

China successfully launched Pakistan's multi-mission communication satellite, PakSAT-MM1, from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in China's southwestern region of Sichuan, using a Long March-3B (LM-3B) carrier rocket. Key Points
  • PakSAT-MM1, part of Pakistan's National Space Programme 2047, intends to improve internet services across the country.
  • The satellite is scheduled to begin offering services in August 2024.
  • This is the 96th launch of the LM-3B vehicle and the 524th of the Long March family.
  • PakSAT-MM1 was created by the China Academy of Space Technology (CAST), a division of China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC).
  • This project is a collaboration between the Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO), Pakistan's space agency, and the Chinese aerospace sector.

The Boxing Federation of India leaves the IBA and joins World Boxing.

The Boxing Federation of India (BFI) has left the suspended International Boxing Association (IBA) to join World Boxing, with the goal of reducing the threat to boxing's Olympic future. Key Points
  • The decision was made after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) told the national federation that boxing would be excluded from the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics if it continued to be affiliated with the International Boxing Association (IBA).
  • The IOC de-recognised the IBA in 2019 owing to ongoing financial, sporting integrity, and governance concerns.
  • The IBA will not be involved in tournaments at the Paris Olympics for the second time in a row, following the Tokyo Games.

Moody’s Ratings Projects India’s GDP to Grow by 6.8% in 2024 and 6.5% in 2025

Moody's Ratings' Global Macro Outlook 2024-25 (May 2024 update) forecasts India's GDP to increase by 6.8% in 2024 and 6.5% in 2025, owing to strong economic expansion and post-election policy continuity. Moody's expects the Indian economy to grow by 6-7% each year in terms of real GDP. Key Points
  • India's real GDP increased to 7.7% in 2023 (up from 6.5% in 2022), boosted by strong government capital spending and manufacturing activity.
  • The interim budget for 2024 calls for considerable capital expenditures (capex), showing a continued emphasis on infrastructure development.
  • The interim budget for 2024 sets a capex target of Rs 11.1 lakh crore, or 3.4% of GDP, in 2024-25, which is 16.9% more than the 2023-24 predictions.
  • Despite intermittent food price increases, inflation falls to 4.8% (headline) and 3.2% (core) in April 2024.
  • The RBI keeps the repo rate at 6.5% in April 2024, reflecting strong growth and inflation around the 4% goal.

Claudia Sheinbaum Elected As Mexico’s First Woman President

Climate scientist and former mayor of Mexico City, Claudia Sheinbaum, has been elected as the first woman to be elected as President of Mexico. She will also be the first Jewish leader of Jewish heritage to hold the office. Key Points
  • Sheinbaum (61) received nearly 58 per cent of the vote, according to preliminary results from the Mexican electoral office.
  • Sheinbaum’s opposition candidate Xochitl Galvez, backed by a coalition of the National Action (PAN), Institutional Revolutionary (PRI) and Democratic Revolution (PRD) parties, has received votes between 26.6 per cent and 28.6 per cent.
  • Jorge Alvarez Maynez of the Citizens’ Movement has received votes between 9.9% and 10.8 per cent.
