International

First Joint Task Force on Investment Meeting Between India and Qatar Takes Place in New Delhi

• The Joint Task Force on Investment (JTFI) between India and Qatar held its inaugural meeting on Thursday, June 6, 2024, in New Delhi, to enhance their investment cooperation.

• Ajay Seth, the secretary of the Department of Economic Affairs, and Mohamed bin Hassen Al-Malki, the undersecretary of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry of the Government of Qatar, co-chaired the Joint Task Force.

• The Joint Task Force on Investment has reaffirmed the commitment of both countries to fortify bilateral relations and capitalize on the potential for accelerated growth, investment opportunities, and synergistic collaboration across diverse sectors ranging from infrastructure, and energy, to technology and innovation.
• This is all in the spirit of fostering mutual growth and prosperity.
• The JTFI has emphasized the importance of the strong economic ties between Qatar and India, which are based on a shared vision for inclusive development, common goals, and shared values.

RBI increases its forecast for FY25 GDP growth to 7.2 percent

• By a majority vote of 4 to 2, the six-member Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) voted on Friday to maintain the benchmark repo rate at 6.5%.
• The MPC maintained its stance of withdrawing accommodations and revised its growth forecast for the current fiscal year, which was previously anticipated to be 7.2%, to a somewhat higher 7.2%.

• The RBI maintained its forecast for CPI inflation in FY25, which is 4.5%, with Q1 at 4.9%, Q2 at 3.8%, Q3 at 4.6%, and Q4 at 4.5%, assuming a typical monsoon.
• RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das revealed the bi-monthly monetary policy and stated that real gross domestic product (GDP) growth in India was projected by the National Statistical Office (NSO) to be 8.2 percent in 2023–2024.
• "So far in 2024–25, domestic economic activity has been resilient," he stated, noting that manufacturing activity is still increasing due to growing local demand.

Sameer Bansal Appointed as MD & CEO of PNB MetLife

• • The private life insurer PNB MetLife India Insurance Company Limited has named Sameer Bansal as its CEO and Managing Director (MD).

• He will assume leadership of the position on July 1st, 2024.

• He takes over from Ashish Srivastava, who was named MD of MetLife Inc.'s Global Shared Services group in India, with headquarters in New York.
• Since joining PNB MetLife in 2007, Bansal has held many leadership positions, most notably that of Chief Distribution Officer.

Rohini Lokhande and Nar Singh receive the Dilip Bose Lifetime Achievement Award

• Coach Nar Singh will get the Dilip Bose medal for lifetime accomplishment, according to the All India Tennis Association (AITA).
• The 69-year-old Rohini Lokhande, who played for the national team alongside Kiran Bedi, Nirupama Mankad, Susan Das, and Udaya Kumar before she began coaching at an early age, will receive the first prize.

• Indian tennis player Dilip Bose was a professional player. He was the Asian championship winner and a player for the Indian Davis Cup team.
• After retiring, he continued to serve as a coach and administrator. The All India Tennis Association created a lifetime achievement award in his honor in 2002.
• Bose won the first Asian Championships in 1949 at his Calcutta South Club in the singles division.
• As a result, in 1950, he was ranked 15 at Wimbledon. After he retired, he let Hans van Swol of the Netherlands win the second-round match; the final score was 6-4, 5-4. He had only recently recovered from a terrible episode of malaria, therefore the doctors had advised him not to play.

• As a coach and instructor for many years, Nar Singh, 65, will be the eleventh person to receive the Dilip Bose Award.

• At the UFC Louisville on Saturday, Indian strawweight Puja Tomar defeated Brazil's Rayanne Amanda dos Santos by split decision, making history as the first Indian to win a fight in the UFC.
• Amanda Rayanne dos Santos lost against Puja Tomar. 30–27, 30–27, and 28–29.

• The card's opening strawweight match pitted Tomar, an Uttar Pradesh native, against Rayanne dos Santos.
• For fifteen minutes, Tomar and dos Santos engaged in intense, fast-paced back-and-forth fighting. Tomar won all three rounds. Tomar fought back, dealing damage as he headed to the final bell, but Santos used her height advantage and range to control the action.

TRISHNA: ISRO and CNES of France Collaborating to Track Earth's Temperature

• • TRISHNA is a satellite that is specifically designed to track the surface temperatures of Earth and slow down climate change.

• The mission has a 5-year operational life and is scheduled for launch in 2025.

• The information gathered from the mission will play a major role in supporting international programs including Global Water Watch, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations (UN), and the Group on Earth Observations Global Agricultural Monitoring (GEOGLAM) initiative for agricultural monitoring.
• Policy officials, watershed managers, and the farming community in India will be able to use the mission's findings to implement sustainable solutions. Consequently, assists in addressing issues with food and water.
• It is anticipated that the mission would advance remote sensing technology, which is critical for tracking extreme weather and temperatures globally.

• For surface energy budgeting at the regional to global scale, TRISHNA is designed to provide high spatial and high temporal resolution monitoring of Earth's surface temperature, emissivity, biophysical, and radiation variables.
• The two main payloads on board the TRISHNA satellite are Thermal Infrared (TIR) and Visible-Near Infrared-Short Wave Infrared (VNIR-SWIR). TIR, which will be supplied by CNES, will have a 4-channel long-wave infrared imaging sensor that can map surface temperatures with high resolution.
• The seven spectral bands of ISRO's VNIR-SWIR will aid in the monitoring of radiation and biophysical factors.
• At an altitude of 761 kilometers (kilometers), the satellite will operate in a sun-synchronous orbit at a local time of 12:30 PM at the equator.
• A spatial resolution of 57 meters (m) for land and coastal areas and 1 km for oceanic and polar regions will be provided by this orbit.

Founder of Ramoji Film City Ramoji Rao passes away at the age of 87

• Veteran media personality and Ramoji group chairman Ramoji Rao passed away in Hyderabad on June 8. He was 87.

• • On November 16, 1936, Ramoji Rao was born in the coastal Andhra Pradesh district of Krishna.
  • His work in a variety of industries, including media, hotel, NBFC, food, and retail shop chains, is unmatched. He was a multifaceted genius.

• Ramoji Rao's ascent from modest beginnings to becoming the mogul and founder of Eenadu, the most widely-read Telugu daily, is legendary.

• One of the first Telugu-language satellite entertainment networks was ETV. In no time at all, ETV became well-known. The range of channels offered by ETV quickly grew to include Telugu, Kannada, Bengali, Hindi, and more.

• The Eenadu newspaper, the ETV network of channels, Ramoji Film City, the largest film city in the world, Dolphin Hotels, Margadarsi Chit Fund, Ushakiran Movies, Priya Foods, and other companies gave thousands of people jobs and still have an impact on millions of people in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and other places.
