International

2025 International Year of Quantum Science and Technology is declared by the UN

About News:- To raise public awareness of the importance of quantum physics and its applications worldwide, the United Nations (UN) has formally proclaimed 2025 to be the International Year of Quantum Physics and Technology (IYQ). Key Points:-
  • National scientific societies get together to celebrate the first 100 years of modern quantum mechanics with this UN-declared IYQ.
  • An international program called the IYQ strives to improve the country's capacities in scientific education and the basic sciences.
  • The goal of this year-long project is to raise awareness of the importance of quantum science and technology in the development of sustainable solutions for the fields of energy, education, communications, and human health.
  • This decision comes after a resolution proposed by Mexico in May 2023, which was endorsed by around 60 nations and approved by the General Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

History :-
  • The UN General Assembly (UNGA) unanimously decided to declare 2025 to be the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology on June 7, 2024.
    • Ghana publicly presented a draft resolution for the official designation of the International Year to the UNGA in May 2024.
  • Before it was approved, six nations (Turkmenistan, Finland, Ghana, India, Peru, and South Africa) co-sponsored it.
Worldwide Approvals:- Prominent scientific unions have endorsed the proclamation, including the following:
  • The International Union of History and Philosophy of Science and Technology (IUHPST),
  • The International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP),
  • The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC),
  • The International Union of Crystallography (IUCr), and others.

To Attend the G7 Summit, PM Modi will leave for Italy on June 13

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi will depart for Italy on Thursday to participate in the 50th G7 Summit, marking his first international trip since beginning his third term.
Key Points:-
  • The G7 summit, which takes place from June 13 to 15, in the luxury resort town of Borgo Egnazia in the Apulia province of Italy, is expected to be dominated by the ongoing battle in Ukraine and the ongoing crisis in Gaza.
  • Among the prominent leaders present at the summit are US President Joe Biden, French President Emmanuel Macron, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
  • Giorgia Meloni, the prime minister of Italy, has extended an invitation to Prime Minister Modi to attend the G7 Outreach Summit on June 14 in the Apulia area of southern Italy.
  • India will be attending the G7 summit for the eleventh time, and PM Modi will be attending for the fifth time in a row.
  • Leaders of eleven developing nations in Africa, South America, and the Indo-Pacific area have also been invited by Italy to attend the summit, in addition to India.

  • The US, UK, France, Italy, Germany, Canada, and Japan make up the G7.
  • With Russia included, the alliance grew into the G8 between 1997 and 2013. However, after annexing Crimea, Russia's involvement was terminated in 2014.

India's major economy continues to grow at the quickest rate in the world: World Bank

About News:-
  • Even if its growth rate is anticipated to decline, the World Bank predicted that India will continue to have the fastest-growing major economy in the world.
  • The June edition of "Global Economic Prospects" kept India's GDP growth prediction for FY25 at 6.6%.
Key Points:-
  • The international body raised its estimate of India's GDP growth to 6.6% for the current fiscal year in April, a 20 basis point rise.
  • In its Global Economic Prospects for June 2024, the World Bank predicted that following a strong performance in FY24, the economy would grow at an average annual rate of 6.7% (or 6.7% in FY26 and 6.8% in FY27) during the three fiscal years beginning in FY25.
  • India's GDP growth beat forecasts in the January–March quarter, coming in at 7.8%, however, that was down from 8.4% in the third quarter.
  • The Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation statistics issued on May 31 raised the GDP growth projection upward to 8.2 percent for the entire fiscal year 2023–24 from the second advance estimate of 7.6 percent.
  • In a recent announcement of its Monetary Policy, the Reserve Bank of India revised up its earlier prediction of 7% GDP growth to 7.2% for FY25.
Global growth outlook :-
    • In 2024, the world economy is exhibiting signs of stabilization for the first time in three years, according to the World Bank's most recent Global Economic Prospects report. In contrast to past norms, this stabilization is still shaky.
  • Global GDP growth for 2024–2025 is now predicted to be 2.6%, up 20 basis points from the forecast made in January. Global growth is predicted to be 2.7% in FY26 and FY27 on the back of moderate increases in trade and investment.

Centre appoints Lt Gen Upendra Dwivedi as next Chief of Army Staff after Manoj Pande

About News:-
  • Lt Gen Upendra Dwivedi, who is now serving as Vice Chief, has been appointed by the Center to be the next Chief of the Army Staff, effective June 30, 2024, in the afternoon, when Manoj Pande's term draws to a close.
Key Points:-
  • According to the official statement from the Defence Ministry, "Lt Gen Dwivedi's command appointments include Command of Regiment (18 Jammu & Kashmir Rifles), Brigade (26 Sector Assam Rifles), DIG, Assam Rifles (East), and 9 Corps."
  • Three GOC-in-C Commendation Cards, the Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM), and the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM) have been presented to the recently appointed Chief as gifts.
About India's new Army Chief:-
  • Lt Gen Upendra Dwivedi was commissioned into the Indian Army's Infantry (Jammu & Kashmir Rifles) on December 15, 1984, after being born on July 1, 1964. Throughout his nearly forty-year career, he has held several positions in instruction, staff, command, and abroad.
  • In addition to his current position as Vice Chief of Army Staff, Dwivedi has held significant positions as General Officer Command and Director General of Infantry.
  • Lt Gen Upendra Dwivedi is a graduate of the Sainik School Rewa, National Defence College, and US Army War College. He also completed coursework at the DSSC Wellington and Army War College, Mhow.
  • Furthermore, the officer received the esteemed title of "Distinguished Fellow" in the highly sought-after NDC comparable course at USAWC, Carlisle, USA.
  • The officer holds two master's degrees in military science and strategic studies in addition to a M Phil in defense and management studies.
Manoj Pande's tenure to end soon:-
  • General Manoj C. Pande, PVSM, AVSM, VSM, the current Chief of Staff of the Army, will leave his position on June 30.
  • The country's ongoing Lok Sabha elections prompted Chief Pande to take an unusual step of extending his term by one month. On May 31, Gen. Pande was scheduled to leave the army.
  • The extension granted to Gen. Pande occurred over fifty years after the first such extension, granted by the government led by Indira Gandhi in the early 1970s, extended the tenure of Army Chief Gen. G. G. Bewoor by one year.

JIMEX-24, the Japan-India Maritime Exercise, begins at Yokosuka

About News:-
  • Yokosuka, Japan welcomed the Indian Navy's homegrown Stealth Frigate, INS Shivalik, for its participation in the bilateral Japan–India Maritime Exercise 2024 (JIMEX 24).
  • Since its launch in 2012, this is JIMEX's ninth edition.
  • VAdm ITO Hiroshi, Commander JMSDF Yokosuka District, and Ambassador Sibi George, the Indian ambassador to Japan, gave the ship a hearty welcome.
Key Points:-
  • The exercise includes both harbour and sea phases. The harbour phase will comprise professional, sports, and social interactions, after which the two navies will jointly hone their warfighting skills at sea and enhance their interoperability through complex multi-discipline operations in the surface, sub-surface and air domains.
  • The IN is being represented by INS Shivalik and the JMSDF is being represented by the Guided Missile Destroyer JS Yugiri.
  • Integral helicopters from both navies will also participate in the joint exercise.
  • Having grown in scope and complexity over the years, JIMEX 24 provides an opportunity to learn from each other's best practices and facilitates operational interactions between IN and JMSDF to foster cooperation and reaffirm their shared commitment towards maritime security in the Indo–Pacific.

Oxford University decided to send back a 500-year-old bronze idol that was stolen in India

About News:-
    • After receiving a formal request from the Indian government, the Ashmolean Museum at Oxford University has chosen to return a 16th-century bronze sculpture of Saint Tirumankai Alvar to India.
    • The museum purchased the 60cm-tall statue from Sotheby's auction house in 1967. It is thought to have been stolen from a Tamil Nadu temple.
  • The museum notified the Indian High Commission after receiving information about the statue's provenance from an independent researcher.
Key Points:-
  • The statue was purchased by the Ashmolean Museum in 1967 from Dr. J.R. Belmont's collection, with the statement that it was acquired in "good faith." However, an independent researcher voiced doubts regarding its provenance, which prompted the museum to go into it and notify the Indian High Commission as a result.
  • Oxford University's Council backed the return of the bronze idol to India after receiving an official request from the Indian government. The Charity Commission is currently seeking approval of the decision.
  • The return of pilfered Indian artifacts from the UK to India is a trend that this ruling continues. Examples from recent times include the restoration of a "Navaneetha Krishna" bronze sculpture and a limestone carved relief sculpture that came from Indian states as a result of joint US-UK investigations conducted by Scotland Yard's Art and Antiques Unit.

T K Chathunni, a former football coach, dies in Kerala at the age of 80

About News:-
  • Former Indian football player and coach T K Chathunni, who was born in Chalakudy, in the Thrissur district, passed away on Wednesday while receiving cancer treatment. He was seventy-nine.
Key Points:-
  • In 1990, Chathunni led Kerala Police to their first-ever Federation Cup victory. He was instrumental in establishing the careers of former national player Joe Paul Ancheri and Indian icon I. M. Vijayan.
  • In addition, he was the nation's record holder for coaching multiple football teams. In addition to coaching teams like FC Kochin, Dempo S.C., and Mohun Bagan A.C., he participated in the Santosh Trophy as a player for Kerala and Goa.
  • The title of his autobiography is "Football, My Soul."
  • The passing of Indian football player Chathunni was lamented by Revenue Minister K Rajan and Union Minister of State Suresh Gopi.
