FATF adopts India's Mutual Evaluation Report at its Sixth and Final FATF Plenary, held in Singapore

• Under the presidency of T. Raja Kumar of Singapore, the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) held its sixth and final plenary in Singapore on June 26 and 28, 2024.
• The FATF considered and approved the joint FATF/APG/EAG Mutual Evaluation Report (MER) of India, which classifies India and the other four G20 (group of 20) nations—Russia, France, Italy, and the United Kingdom (UK)—into the "regular follow-up" category.
• The debates on important money laundering (ML), terrorism financing (TF), and proliferation financing concerns drew in delegates from over 200 states as well as observers from international organizations.

• The FATF President convened with the Chairs of nine FATF-Style Regional Bodies (FSRBs) to enhance collaboration and establish goals for the Global Network.
• Under the Singaporean Presidency, the Women in FATF and Global Network (WFGN) project was introduced. It includes a multi-cultural trial mentoring program with 15 mentor-mentee pairs from a range of backgrounds and cultures.
• During the occasion, an e-book on women leaders called "Breaking Barriers: Inspiring the Next Generation of Women Leaders" was also released.
• The fifth annual update on virtual assets and service providers will be published, as agreed by the FATF.
• The membership of the Russian Federation is still suspended.
• Under Elisa de Anda Madrazo, Mexico will take over the FATF Presidency on July 1, 2024, and end on June 30, 2026.

The 9th Amendment Telecommunication Mobile Number Portability Regulations, 2024 go into effect on July 1st, 2024

• The Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Ministry of Communications (MoC), Government of India (GoI), through the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) announced on June 28, 2024, that the Telecommunication Mobile Number Portability (9th Amendment) Regulations, 2024, issued on March 14, 2024, will go into effect on July 1st, 2024.
• The purpose of these new restrictions was to prevent fraudulent Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) swapping or replacement by dishonest individuals, which is a method of porting mobile numbers.
• In the exercise of the authority granted by sub-section (1) of section 36, read with sub-clauses (i), (iii), and (v) of clause (b) of sub-section (1) of section 11, of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India Act, 1997, TRAI has revised the Telecommunication Mobile Number Portability Regulations, 2009.

• A new criterion has been added to the regulations for rejecting requests for the assignment of a Unique Porting Code (UPC), which is the first step towards using Mobile Number Portability (MNP) to switch service providers.
• It further stipulates that if the request for UPC was submitted before seven (formerly, ten) days had passed from the SIM swap or mobile number replacement date, then UPC cannot be issued.
• Only users who have misplaced their SIM card and requested a replacement are eligible for this; consumers who are upgrading their SIM card are not restricted from transferring.
• The MNP feature, which allows users to keep their mobile number when switching access providers in India, is one of the new regulations' permitted choices.
• November 2010 saw the initial experimental introduction of the MNP capability in the Haryana telecom circle. Later, in July 2015, MNP was expanded to include all of India.

• It is a code that users are given after submitting an MNP request. To effectively port their mobile number into their network, users must share this code with both their new telecom service providers and, if their SIM is replaced, with their current telecom operator.

• The Income Tax Department's governing body, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), has named Ravi Agrawal as its new chairman. He is an Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer from the 1988 batch. On June 30, 2024, Nitin Gupta's extended term came to an end. He succeeded her.
• Gupta was awarded a nine-month extension to June 2024 after being appointed as the chairman of CBDT in June 2022. Originally, he was supposed to resign in September 2023.
• His employment will be on a contract basis through June 30, 2025, according to the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), even though his retirement is planned for September 2024.

• Ravi Agrawal was chosen to supervise direct tax matters as a member of the CBDT.
• In addition, he worked as the Director General (DG) of Income Tax Investigation in Delhi and was a member administrator of CBDT.

MMRDA and the German Development Bank KfW Sign a Rs. 850 Crore Urban Infrastructure Financing Agreement

• The Frankfurt-based German state-owned development bank KfW (previously known as KfW Bankengruppe) and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) have inked a deal to deliver more than Rs 850 crore in funding for urban infrastructure projects in Mumbai, Maharashtra.
• By the agreement, MMRDA will contribute equity to these sustainable projects by raising around Rs 365 crore from its resources.

• The Mumbai Metropolitan Region in Maharashtra and its surrounding areas would be the primary recipient of the monies donated by KfW and MMRDA through their respective resources.
• To address environmental concerns and improve the quality of life for those residing in the metropolitan area, these sustainable development projects include the creation of green corridors, solid waste management systems, recycling and reuse facilities, and the promotion of renewable energy solutions.
• The MMR Urban Infrastructure Amenities Project of the state government will handle these projects. Its projected cost is approximately Rs 1,215 crore, of which MMRDA would contribute Rs 365 crore from its fund.
• One of the main current projects being overseen by MMRDA is the Public Transportation System, which calls for the construction of 14 separate metro lines throughout Mumbai and MMR. The entire length of these metro lines is 337 km.

Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi Assumes Leadership of the 30th Chief of Staff of the Army

• As the 30th Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) of the Indian Army (IA), Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi, a former Vice Chief of Army Staff (VCOAS), assumed command on June 30, 2024.
• General Manoj Pande, who assumed command as COAS in May 2022, was succeeded by him. On June 30, 2024, Manoj Pande was granted superannuation following forty years of exemplary service within the Indian Air Force.

• Renowned military commander General Upendra Dwivedi enrolled in the esteemed National Defence Academy (NDA) in January 1981 and was commissioned on December 15, 1984, into the 18th Battalion of the Jammu & Kashmir (J&K) Rifles.
• In addition, he has held the ranks of Major General and Brigadier General and commanded the 9 Corps (Rising Star Corps) and Assam Rifles units in the Northeast (NE).
• As part of Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India), he handled the introduction of indigenous equipment in the largest Army command in India, which he helped modernize and equip.
• Gen. Dwivedi served as Northern Command's General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C) from 2022 to 2024, when he was appointed as VCOAS on February 19, 2024.
• In recognition of his distinguished service, General Upendra Dwivedi has been granted three GOC-in-C Commendation cards, the Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM), and the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM).

Three Books About Former Vice President Venkaiah Naidu Are Released by PM Modi

• Using a video conference on Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi published three volumes about the life and travels of former Indian Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu.
• The book launch was held on the eve of the former vice president Naidu's 75th birthday at the Anvaya Convention Centre in Gachibowli, Hyderabad, Telangana.

• The biography of the former vice president, "Venkaiah Naidu - Life in Service," written by S. Nagesh Kumar, a former resident editor of The Hindu, Hyderabad edition, is one of the books the prime minister has released.
• IV Subba Rao, the former Secretary to the Vice President of India, has collected a pictorial chronicle titled "Celebrating Bharat - The Mission and Message of M Venkaiah Naidu as 13th Vice-President of India."
• The third book, written by Sanjay Kishore, is a photographic biography in Telugu called "Mahaneta - Life and Journey of M. Venkaiah Naidu."

Japan's new flagship H3 rocket carried the Earth observation satellite ALOS-4 into orbit

• Japan launched the Advanced Land Observation Satellite-4 "DAICHI-4" (ALOS-4) on July 1, 2024, from the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency's (JAXA) Tanegashima Space Center (TNSC) off the coast of Kyushu, Japan, using its new flagship third H3 Launch Vehicle (H3 F3: Flight No. 3).
• The satellite's deployment into Lower Earth Orbit (LEO) was accomplished with success.
• This is the third deployment of the H3 system; on February 17, 2024, it successfully launched two microsatellites and a dummy satellite into space called Vehicle Evaluation Payload 4 (VEP 4).

• Its predecessor, DAICHI-2 (ALOS-2), will be replaced by ALOS-4. It has a far greater field of view. Until further notice, Japan will use both.
• It has an infrared sensor that was created by the Japanese Ministry of Defense.
• Its primary duty is earth observation, intending to gather information for mapping and disaster response.
• The satellite can track military activities such as missile launches with the use of an infrared sensor.

• In collaboration with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Limited (MHI), JAXA developed the H3 rocket.
• The H-IIA launch system, which was initially launched in 2001, is replaced by this one.
• This rocket is specifically made to lift a 6.5 metric ton payload into orbit for 5 billion Japanese Yen (JPY), or USD 33 million, each flight. It is an affordable rocket.

In the women's 100-meter hurdles at the National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships, Jyothi Yarraji of India won gold

• Jyothi Yarraji of India won the gold medal in the women's 100-meter hurdles today at the Panchkula National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships.
• With a time of 13.06 seconds, Jyothi prevailed. Tejas Shirse, however, took home the gold in the men's 110-meter hurdles event with a time of 13.54 seconds.
• According to world rankings, Jyothi and Tejas have the most chance of making it to the Olympics in Paris.

The eSankhyiki Portal was launched by MOSPI to improve user experience and facilitate data access

• The eSankhyiki portal (https://esankhyiki.mospi.gov.in/) is an online platform that the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MOSPI) has established. It provides planners, policy-makers, researchers, and the general public with real-time data.
• The objective is to create an all-encompassing system for managing and exchanging data that will facilitate the easy dissemination of official statistics throughout India.
• On June 29, 2024, National Statistics Day, Dr. Arvind Panagariya, Chairman of the 16th Finance Commission of India, launched the platform during a New Delhi, Delhi ceremony.
• "Use of data for decision making" is the theme for Statistics Day in 2024.

• It is a user-centric data portal that can be accessible via the MoSPI website and makes it easier for users to consume and reuse information for data value addition and analysis.
• The Data Catalogue and Macro Indicators modules make up the majority of the portal.
• The Data Catalogue module facilitates user access to Ministry data by centralizing its primary data assets. With the help of this module, users can download relevant data to enhance its value and reusability and search inside the datasets, which includes tables.
• Seven data items are included in this module: the Consumer Price Index (CPI), the Annual Survey of Industries, the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS), the Household Consumption Expenditure Survey, the National Accounts Statistics (NAS), and the Multiple Indicator Survey.
• For user convenience, it already includes over 2291 datasets with corresponding metadata and visualization for each dataset.
