Hyderabad is no longer Andhra Pradesh's capital

About News:- Hyderabad will no longer serve as Telangana and Andhra Pradesh's joint capital. Hyderabad was designated as the common capital for both states for a period not to exceed ten years from June 2, 2014, in accordance with Section 5(1) of the AP Reorganisation Act, 2014. Key Points:-
  • According to Section 5(2) of the Act, Andhra Pradesh will construct a new capital and Hyderabad will become the only capital of Telangana after this time.
  • Andhra Pradesh has yet to create a permanent capital because court cases pertaining to Amaravati and Visakhapatnam are still pending.
  • If Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy stays in office, Kurnool will be the judicial capital, Amaravati will be the legislative seat, and Visakhapatnam will be the administrative capital.
  • Hyderabad will be the sole capital city of Telangana as of June 2.

In May, GST revenue reaches Rs 1.73 lakh crore

About News:-
  • The gross Goods and Services Tax (GST) revenue for May 2024 stood at ₹1.73 lakh crore.
  • This represents a 10% year-on-year growth, driven by a strong increase in domestic transactions (up 15.3%) and a slowing of imports (down 4.3%).
  • After accounting for refunds, the net GST revenue for May 2024 stands at ₹1.44 lakh crore, reflecting a growth of 6.9% compared to the same period last year.
Key Points:- Breakdown of May 2024 Collections:
  • Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST): ₹32,409 crore;
  • State Goods and Services Tax (SGST): ₹40,265 crore;
  • Integrated Goods and Services Tax (IGST): ₹87,781 crore, including ₹39,879 crore collected on imported goods;
  • Cess: ₹12,284 crore, including ₹1,076 crore collected on imported goods.
  • The gross GST collections in the FY 2024-25 till May 2024 stood at ₹3.83 lakh crore.
  • This represents an impressive 11.3% year-on-year growth, driven by a strong increase in domestic transactions (up 14.2%) and a marginal increase in imports (up 1.4%). After accounting for refunds, the net GST revenue in the FY 2024-25 till May 2024 stands at ₹3.36 lakh crore, reflecting a growth of 11.6% compared to last year.
The breakdown of collections in the FY 2024-25 till May 2024, are as below:
  • Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST): ₹76,255 crore;
  • State Goods and Services Tax (SGST): ₹93,804 crore;
  • Integrated Goods and Services Tax (IGST): ₹1,87,404 crore, including ₹77,706 crore collected on imported goods;
  • Cess: ₹25,544 crore, including ₹2,084 crore collected on imported goods.
About GST Council :- The Goods and Services Tax Council is a constitutional body tasked with advising the federal and state governments on matters about the Goods and Services Tax. The Union Finance Minister serves as the chair of the GST Council. In accordance with Article 279A of the modified Constitution, the members of the GST Council, a joint forum of the federal government and the states, will be as follows:
  1. a) The chairman of the Union Finance Minister.
  2. b) The state minister of the union in charge of finances or income.
  3. c) Any other minister designated by each state government, or the minister in charge of finances or taxes.
In accordance with Article 279A(4), the Council will advise the Union and the states on significant matters pertaining to Goods and Services Tax (GST), such as the products and services that may be liable to or exempt from GST, model GST laws, Place of Supply principles, threshold limits, GST rates, including floor rates with bands, special rates for additional resources raised during natural disasters, special provisions for specific states, etc.

About News:- Vijaya Bharathi Sayani was named acting chairwoman of the National Human Rights Commission by the Center on Monday, following the resignation of Arun Mishra, a former Supreme Court judge, after a three-year term. Key points:-
  • “The President, under Section 7(1) of the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993, is pleased to authorise Smt Vijaya Bharathi Sayani, Member, National Human Rights Commission, to act as the Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission, with effect from 02.06.2024, until the appointment of a new Chairperson in the NHRC to fill such vacancy,” a notification by the Ministry of Home Affairs stated.
  • The Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993 was changed by Parliament in 2019 to update the qualifications for chairwoman of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and state human rights commissions.
  • Before the amendment, the only person eligible to be appointed as chairwoman of the NHRC was a former Chief Justice of India; now, Supreme Court judges are eligible to be considered.
About Sayani:- In December 2023, Sayani, an advocate who works for the Telangana High Court, was named to the NHRC. As to the NHRC report, Sayani acted as a pro bono legal assistance provider for individuals from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, handling matters including harassment of women and dowries. India won 7 medals at the Taiwan Athletics Open 2024, including 3 gold ones

The Chinese Taipei Athletics Association organized the World Athletics-sanctioned Taiwan Athletics Open 2024. Key Points:-
  • With a leap of 6.43 meters, Indian competitor Nayana James took home the gold in the women's long jump competition. The silver medal went to Sumire Hata of Japan, while Yu Jeongmi of South Korea took home the bronze.
  • Nayana James has now reached her fourth podium of the 2024 campaign. She previously took home the gold in the women's long jump in the March 2024 Third Indian Open Jumps Competition. In May 2024, she also took home the gold medal in the Federation Cup's women's long jump competition.
  • Devarakeshavi Prakasha (DP) Manu, an Indian track and field athlete, recorded a distance of 81.58 meters to win the gold medal in the men's javelin throw competition.
  • With 76.21 meters, Chinese Taipei's Cheng Chao-tsun—who now holds the Asian mark of 91.36 meters—settled for silver, while his countryman Huang Chao-hung took home the bronze with 71.24 meters.
  • Manu has already finished on the podium three times this season. He had earlier won silver in the Federation Cup in May 2024 and gold in the Indian Grand Prix 1 in April 2024.
  • Ankesh Chaudhary of India won the gold medal in the men's 800 meters with a time of 1:50.63, while fellow countryman Somnath Chauhan had to settle for silver (1:50.88). The bronze went to Filipino Lorana Hussein.
  • Ankesh has won gold in the men's 800 meters at the Federation Cup and the Indian Grand Prix-1. Silver in the Federation Cup went to Somnath.
  • Dev Kumar Meena of India won the silver medal in the men's 5.10-meter pole vault.
  • In the women's 100-meter hurdles, Nithya Ramraj took home the silver medal, while Velluva Koroth Vismaya took home the bronze in the 400-meter race.

Government abolishes the CRPF DIG Kajan Singh

About News:-
  • The Union government has removed a CRPF DIG from duty due to allegations of sexual misconduct made against him by certain female members of the largest paramilitary force in the nation.
  • On May 30, Khajan Singh, a former sports officer of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Deputy Inspector General (DIG), received an order for "dismissal from service" from the office of the President of India.
Key Points:-
  • The officer faced the charges in two cases.
  • Singh, who currently holds the position of chief sports officer for the CRPF, took home a silver medal in the 200-meter butterfly at the 1986 Seoul Asian Games—India's first swimming medal in the competition since 1951.
  • In 1986, the CRPF, a force with around 3.25 lakh troops, became the first to admit women into combat ranks. There are now six all-female battalions in it, with a total of roughly 8,000 soldiers.
  • In 1984, he received the Arjuna Award, India’s second-highest sporting honour.
  • He runs the Khajan Singh Swimming Academy in Delhi.

The Cooperation Minister assesses the development of pilot programs for storing grain in eleven states

  • At its first meeting, the National Level Coordination Committee (NLCC) for India's large-scale grain storage project, led by Cooperation Secretary Ashish Kumar Bhutani, examined the development of the pilot project that was started in 11 states last year.
  • The Ministry of Cooperation is leading the initiative, which intends to establish a decentralized nationwide network of warehouses and other agricultural infrastructure at the Primary Agricultural Credit Society (PACS) level.

  • The first meeting of the National Level Coordinating Committee (NLCC) for the world's largest grain storage scheme was held on Monday (June 03, 2024) at the Ministry of Cooperatives in New Delhi.
  • The ambitious plan envisages transforming PACS into Multi-Service Societies
  • With funding from NABARD and FCI, the National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC) is currently expanding the pilot initiative to include 500 more PACS.
  • The proposal establishes warehouses, custom hiring centers, processing units, and fair pricing shops by utilizing current government schemes including the Agriculture Infrastructure Fund (AIF) and Agricultural Marketing Infrastructure Scheme (AMI).
  • Additional PACS for the building of storage capacity under the project have been identified by States, Union Territories, and national cooperatives like NCCF and NAFED.
  • States of UP, MP, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Assam, Tripura, Uttarakhand, and Telangana have implemented their pilot project.
