National Space Day 2024:
On August 23, 2023, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) achieved a milestone by successfully landing the Chandrayaan-3 mission's lander and rover on the Moon. This historic event made India the fourth nation to achieve a lunar landing and the first to reach the Moon's southern polar region. Following the soft landing, the Pragyan Rover was successfully deployed, furthering the mission's success. History of National Space Day
To commemorate the successful launch of the Chandrayaan-3 Mission and the soft landing of the Vikram Lander, along with the deployment of the Pragyaan Rover on the Moon on August 23, 2023, the Government of India has declared August 23rd as "National Space Day" to be observed annually. This achievement places India among the elite group of spacefaring nations, becoming the fourth country to land on the Moon and the first to land near the lunar south pole.
Theme of National Space Day 2024
To celebrate this milestone in the Indian Space Program, the Department of Space is organizing nationwide events throughout August 2024, with the theme
“Touching lives while touching the Moon: India's Space Saga,”
aimed at engaging and inspiring the youth of the nation towards space science and its applications.
As part of these celebrations, the Government of Karnataka, in collaboration with the Central Institute of Coastal Engineering for Fishery, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Government of India, has planned Workshops and Demonstrations at Malpe fishing harbour on August 14, 2024, and at Mangalore fishing harbour on August 16, 2024. The Space Application Centre, Ahmedabad, will assist with activities related to Vessel Communication and Support System, OceanSAT, NavIC, PFZ, and more.
These Workshops and Demonstrations will offer a unique opportunity for stakeholders, including students from fisheries universities, sea-going fishermen, boat owners, State Fishery Department Officials, Sagar Mitras, and Fisheries Cooperative Societies, to explore exhibits and gain insights into the vessel communication and support systems.

A grand two-day event at Bharat Mandapam will mark the National Space Day celebrations, featuring high-profile sessions, interactive exhibitions, and key announcements on India's space achievements.
Space on Wheels:
The "Space on Wheels" project, launched through a collaboration between ISRO and Vijnana Bharati (VIBHA), involves mobile exhibition buses visiting universities and colleges to educate students about ISRO's missions and India's space advancements.
ISRO Space Tutors:
ISRO’s 120 registered Space Tutors will organize nationwide outreach events, including talks, quizzes, and exhibitions, to promote space education and engage students in space science.
Bharatiya Antariksh Hackathon:
The 2024 Bharatiya Antariksh Hackathon, organized by ISRO, will invite students to solve space tech challenges, with finalists competing for internships at ISRO centres and the top three winners showcasing their projects during the National Space Day celebrations.
ISRO Robotics Challenge:
ISRO Robotics Challenge invites students to design and build space robots, addressing real-world challenges in an extraterrestrial-inspired arena.
