Prayagraj Witnessed its First Amrit Snan on Makar Sankranti

Prayagraj Witnessed its First Amrit Snan on Makar Sankranti: On January 14, which was also Makar Sankranti, the Mahakumbh Mela 2025, which is now taking place in Prayagraj, saw its first amrit snan or shahi snan. A series of holy dips in the confluence of the Yamuna, Ganga, and the fabled Saraswati rivers began with this ceremonial bath.

Significance of Makar Sankranti

The celebration, which is observed on January 14th, commemorates the Sun's entry into Makar Raashi (Capricorn). Sankranti, this shift, is especially significant since it marks the beginning of Uttarayan, the Sun's voyage north. The arrival of warmer, longer days and the end of the severe winter months are signalled by this movement. Uttarayan is considered the gods' midday in Hindu mythology, denoting a fortunate time for festivities and religious pursuits. In order to achieve spiritual emancipation, Bhishma Pitamah of the Mahabharata decided to die during Uttarayan. The festival is especially important since it marks the conclusion of the kharmas, a month-long period where bad things don't happen. A major motif in Hindu traditions is the reunification of family, which is celebrated when the Sun enters Capricorn, the house governed by Shani (Saturn), who is thought to be the Sun's son. In various areas of the country, the celebrations surrounding the day go by several names, including Makar Sankranti, Pongal, and Bhogal Bihu, among others.
