Ancient and medieval themes are interwoven throughout Bhadohi's historical fabric. The Mahābhārata states that the Pandavas fled Lakshagrah via a tunnel and took sanctuary in Bhadohi's Semradhnath. After splitting from Varanasi district on June 30, 1994, the district took on its current shape.
