Emmanuelle Soubeyran She has been elected director general of the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) f or the 2024-2029 term. She is currently a head of France's veterinary services.
About WOAH: It was founded in 1924 as the Office International des Epizooties (OIE). In May 2003 it adopted the common name World Organisation for Animal Health. It is an intergovernmental organisation that focuses on transparently disseminating information on animal diseases, improving animal health globally and thus building a safer, healthier and more sustainable world.

May 31 World No Tobacco Day
  • It is celebrated annually on May 31st to raise awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco use and advocate for effective policies to reduce consumption.
  • The theme for 2024 is “Protecting Children from Tobacco Industry Interference,” focusing on preventing the tobacco industry from targeting young people with harmful products and promoting policies that shield them from manipulative practices.
  • World No Tobacco Day, spearheaded by the World Health Organisation (WHO), originated in 1987 with a resolution titled “World No Smoking Day” to encourage tobacco users to quit. The following year, May 31, was designated as World No Tobacco Day, becoming an annual global event.

Exercise Forces Involved Important Points
Red Flag 24 Multinational exercise
  • Indian Air Force contingent had arrived at the Eielson Air Force Base in Alaska to participate in the prestigious multi-national exercise, Red Flag 24.
  • It is a two-week ( commenced on May 30 and will continue until June 14) advanced aerial combat training exercise aimed at integrating aircrew in a multinational environment.
  • It is designed to replicate a realistic and challenging environment, bringing together aircrew and equipment from different nations and services.
  • This year’s exercise promises a unique experience for the IAF as it joins forces with other international participants to enhance their combat readiness and interoperability.
  • Eielson Air Force Base, located just 40 km from the town of Fairbanks, to serve as the hub for this multinational collaboration.
  • The exercise is managed by the 353rd Combat Training Squadron based at Eielson AFB. This squadron oversees three weapons ranges covering an area of 180,000 square kilometers, comparable to the size of the Indian state of Karnataka.

Oman The National Archives of India (NAI) has completed its first overseas project by digitising and archiving the documents of the Indian diaspora in Oman . "The Oman Collection," aimed at digitizing and preserving documents of the Indian diaspora in Oman from as far back as 1838.
Russia Russia removed the Taliban from a list of banned terrorist organisations , three years after they returned to power in Afghanistan. Kazakhstan removed the Taliban from its list of banned organisations at the end of 2023.

  • Tata Consultancy Services , a global leader in IT services, consulting, and business solutions, has entered a strategic partnership with the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT-Bombay), to develop India’s first Quantum Diamond Microchip Imager . This advanced sensing tool will hold the potential to unlock new levels of precision in the examination of semiconductor chips, reduce chip failures and improve the energy efficiency of electronic devices.
  • Agnikul Cosmos, an IIT Madras-incubated startup, successfully launched the world’s first rocket with a fully 3D printed engine , named ‘Agnibaan – SOrTeD’.
This groundbreaking achievement also marks India’s first semi-cryogenic engine to be completely designed and manufactured indigenously. The launch took place from India’s first privately developed launchpad, ‘Dhanush’ , at Sriharikota.
