Scott Flemming He was appointed as the new head coach of the Indian men’s basketball team by the Basketball Federation of India (BFI). This will be Flemming’s second stint with the India men’s basketball team after serving in the same role between 2012 and 2015.
Sunita Williams NASA’s Boeing Crew Flight Test launched Indian-origin astronaut Sunita Williams and her colleague Butch Wilmore on their third space mission to the International Space Station (ISS) . This mission is the first crewed flight (earlier two were unmanned orbital flight tests — Boe-OFT and Boe-OFT 2 in 2019 and 2022 respectively) of the Starliner spacecraft. It aims to test the spacecraft's system from launch to landing and back to Earth.

Pulitzer Prize
  • Columbia University hosted the 108th Pulitzer Prize ceremony on May 7 , honoring excellence in American journalism, literature, drama, and music.
  • Among this year's recipients, The New York Times earned one of its three Pulitzer Prizes for its thorough reporting on the Gaza conflict.
  • WaPo, Reuters, AP and others are also awarded.
  • The Pulitzer Prizes were established by Joseph Pulitzer, a Hungarian-American journalist and newspaper publisher , who left money to Columbia University upon his death in 1911.
  • A portion of his bequest was used to found the School of Journalism in 1912 and to establish the Pulitzer Prizes, The annual Pulitzer Prizes, first presented in 1917.

  • Zomato co-founder and CEO Deepinder Goyal has announced " India's first crowd-supported weather infrastructure " that aims to provide real-time information on temperature, rain, humidity, wind speed and other weather-related updates.
  • The weather infrastructure (http://weatherunion.com) is a proprietary network of 650+ on-ground weather stations - the largest private infrastructure of its kind in India Zomato.
  • These weather stations, developed by Zomato would provide localised, real-time information on key weather parameters such as temperature, humidity, wind speed, rainfall etc ,".
  • Currently available across 45 large cities, these weather stations will expand in other Indian cities “very soon".

World Migration Report 2024
  • The International Organization for Migration (IOM) released the World Migration Report 2024.
  • It reveals significant shifts in global migration patterns, including a record number of displaced people and a major increase in international remittances.
  • The report highlights that international migration remains a driver of human development and economic growth, highlighted by a more than 650 per cent increase in international remittances from 2000 to 2022, rising from USD 128 billion to USD 831 billion. The growth continued despite predictions from many analysts that remittances would decrease substantially because of COVID-19.
  • Of that 831 billion in remittances, 647 billion were sent by migrants to low– and middle-income countries.
  • As per the report India was the highest recipient of remittances from abroad at $111 billion in 2022. Its remittance receipts were way ahead of its closely ranked peers Mexico ($61.1 billion), China ($51 billion), Philippines ($38.05 billion) and France ($30.04 billion).
  • With an estimated 281 million international migrants worldwide, the number of displaced individuals due to conflict, violence, disaster, and other reasons has surged to the highest levels in modern-day records, reaching 117 million.

May 8th World Thalassaemia Day World Thalassaemia Day is observed on May 8th every year. World Thalassaemia Day 2024 theme:- “Empowering Lives, Embracing Progress:- Equitable and Accessible Thalassaemia Treatment for All”. In the year 1994 , World Thalassaemia Day was first established by Founder of Thalassemia International Federation (TIF) Panos Englezos in the memory of his son George, who died of Thalassemia. Thalassemia is an inherited blood disorder in which the body makes an abnormal form of hemoglobin.
May 8th Rabindranath Tagore Jayanti Rabindranath Tagore was called Gurudev, Kabiguru, and Biswakabi affectionately and his songs are popularly known as Rabindrasangeet. Rabindranath Tagore penned down the national anthems of India and Bangladesh – the Jana Gana Mana and the Amar Shonar Bangla . He was born on May 7, 1861, in Kolkata, India. According to the Bengali calendar, Rabindranath Tagore Jayanti is celebrated on May 8, 2024. He was the first Asian to win the Nobel Prize in 1913 for his collection of poems, Gitanjali.

  • Tejaswin Shankar’s personal best is 2.29m, a national record, achieved in 2018.
The USATF Throws Festival is a World Athletics Continental Tour silver-level meet. Performances in these events earn athletes valuable Olympic ranking points in the Road to Paris 2024. Only 32 athletes – with a maximum of three from each country – can qualify for the men’s high jump event at the Paris 2024 Olympics. Athletes can earn a quota in one of two ways - either by achieving the entry standard within the qualification period or based on their rankings within the ranking period.
  • A russian player Andrey Rublev defeated Felix Auger-Aliassime and won the Madrid Open for the first time. Madrid Open is an annual professional tennis tournament held in Madrid , Spain.
