Hurun Global Unicorn Index 2024
  • The index is released by Hurun Research Institute.
  • According to the Hurun Global Unicorn Index 2024, India for the first time recorded a decline in unicorn creation since 2017.
  • According to the index, India in 2023 had 67 unicorns, which is one less than 68 such startups last year.
  • The US led the list with 703 unicorns, up 37 from 2022, and China with 340 unicorns. UK and EU ranked No 4 and No 5 in the list, respectively.
QS World University Rankings
  • The QS World University Rankings for the year 2024 have been released by QS Quacquarelli Symonds . India's ranking entries by subject and overall performance in the QS World University Rankings this year have increased by 19 per cent and 17 per cent respectively .
  • In this ranking , Jawaharlal Nehru University has secured first position in the country for this year's recruitment .
  • The Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Ahmedabad has been ranked among the top 25 institutes worldwide for business and management studies. Apart from this, IIM-Bangalore and Calcutta have been ranked in the top 50.
  • Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati has performed well in Data Science, securing a global ranking of 51-70 . It has been ranked 51-100 globally in Petroleum Engineering .

13 April Jallianwala Bagh Memorial Day
  • Every year 13th April is celebrated as Jallianwala Bagh Memorial Day. On 13th April in the year 1919, on the day of Baisakhi, British General Dyer ordered fire on the people who were attending a peaceful meeting.
  • In protest against this incident, Nobel Prize winner Rabindranath Tagore renounced the knighthood given to him by the British.
  • After this massacre, Gandhiji renounced the title of Kaiser-e-Hind given by the British for his work during the Boer War.
  • Chettur Sankaran Nair, the only Indian representative on the Viceroy's Executive Council at the time, resigned from his post in protest.

Israel Israel for the first time has deployed its ship-mounted defence system, called the C-Dome. The C-Dome is a naval version of the Iron Dome air defence system used to shield against rocket and missile attacks. The C-Dome was first unveiled in 2014, declared operational in November 2022.

  • For the first time, India will post defence attaches in several countries including Ethiopia, Mozambique, Ivory Coast, Philippines, Armenia and Poland in line with its broader policy initiative to expand strategic ties with key regions, a move that comes amid renewed geopolitical rivalries. New Delhi is also appointing a new defence attache to the tiny African nation of Djibouti that serves as a major maritime gateway around the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, and is considered as a prized location for military bases, people familiar with the matter said on Wednesday. The new defence attache in Djibouti will be the second one to hold the post in the island nation.
  • HDFC became the first private bank to open a branch in Lakshadweep’s Kavaratti Island.
  • India has achieved its target to eliminate visceral leishmaniasis, commonly known as kala-azar , according to data from the National Centre for Vector Borne Diseases Control (NCVBDC). India had initially aimed to eliminate kala-azar by 2010, but the target was extended until 2023 due to persistent challenges.
Kala-azar, a vector-borne disease caused by protozoan parasites transmitted through sandfly bites, has posed a significant health challenge for decades, particularly in states like Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, and Uttar Pradesh.
