Vadhavan Port The Union Cabinet approved setting up a Major Port at Vadhavan near Dahanu in Maharashtra . Key Points
  • Authorities: The Project will be constructed by Vadhavan Port Project Limited (VPPL), an SPV formed by Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) and Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB) with a shareholding of 74% and 26%, respectively.
  • The Vadhavan Port will be developed as an all-weather Greenfield deep draft major port in Vadhavan, Palghar District, Maharashtra.
  • Cost : The total project cost, including the land acquisition component is Rs.76,220 Crore. This will include development of Core infrastructure, Terminals and other commercial infrastructure in public-private partnerships (PPP) mode.
  • Infrastructure : The Port will comprise nine container terminals, each 1000 meters long, four multipurpose berths, including the coastal berth, four liquid cargo berths, a Ro-Ro berth, and a Coast Guard berth.

  • On June 21, 2024, Directorate General Resettlement (DGR), Ministry of Defence, organisined an Ex-Servicemen Job Fair at Station Auditorium, Air Force Station, Hindon (Ghaziabad), Uttar Pradesh. The Job Fair aims to connect Veterans and Employers, offering a second opportunity for employment to the Ex-servicemen (ESM). The veterans of Tri-services from all over the country were eligible for participation in the job fair.

Schemes/Initiatives

National Forensic Infrastructure Enhancement Scheme (NFIES)
    • The Union Cabinet has approved  the proposal of the Ministry of Home Affairs for the Central Sector Scheme “ National Forensic Infrastructure Enhancement Scheme (NFIES).
    • Financial outlay of Rs. 2254.43 crore
    • Duration: From 2024-25 to 2028-29
    • Financial outlay of the Central Sector Scheme will be provisioned by the Ministry of Home Affairs from its own budget.
  • Components of theScheme:
    • Establishment   of  Campuses   of  the National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU) in the country
    • Establishment of Central Forensic Science Laboratories in the country.
    • Enhancement of existing infrastructure of the Delhi Campus of the NFSU.
  • The establishment of additional off-campuses of the National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU)  and new Central Forensic Science Laboratories (CFSLs) would address the shortage of trained forensic manpower, alleviate the caseload / pendency of forensic laboratories, and align with the Government of India's goal of securing a high conviction rate of more than 90% .

  • World Food India − the nation's largest food event , to foster collaboration and partnerships among global and Indian food sector stakeholders from 19th to 22nd September 2024.
  • Additionally, this year, to give impetus to the growing startup ecosystem and foster innovation, the Ministry is launching the 2nd edition of the Startup Grand Challenge in collaboration with Startup India.
  • Eight lakh National Cadet Corps (NCC) cadets celebrated the 10th International Day of Yoga by participating in yoga sessions organised by NCC across the country on June 21, 2024 .
  • The sessions were organised at numerous schools, colleges & iconic locations including Sun Temple (Konark, Odisha), Red Fort (Delhi), Dal Lake (Srinagar, J&K), Sabarmati Riverfront (Ahmedabad, Gujarat), Sanchi Stupa (Sanchi, MP), Gateway of India (Mumbai, Maharashtra), Nainital Lake (Nainital, Uttarakhand), Jhansi Fort (Jhansi, UP), and Victoria Memorial (Kolkata, WB).

Gomphonemoid  diatom- Indiconema  genus
  • Researchers have discovered a new genus of the Gomphonemoid diatom found in the clean water river of the Eastern Ghats.
  • The genus which has an interesting suite of features, distinguishing it from the other members in the group Gomphonemoid in terms of v alve symmetry and other certain valve features, has been named Indiconema to value its restricted distribution in the country.

  • Diatoms are microscopic algae that play a crucial role in our everyday lives by producing 25 percent of global oxygen , approximately every fourth breath of oxygen we inhale. They serve as a base of the aquatic food chain. Due to their sensitivity towards any water chemistry changes, they are excellent indicators of aquatic health.
  • Diatoms are the first recorded microorganisms in India, with Ehrenberg's first report dating back to 1845 in his voluminous publication Mikrogeologie .
