Ganga Dolphin

  • According to the Wildlife Institute of India, about 4,000 dolphins currently exist in the Ganga and its tributaries.
  • The population of Ganges dolphins in Uttar Pradesh is estimated to be 2,000, which is more than half of the total number of Ganges dolphins found in India.
  • Considering the importance of Ganga dolphin in Uttar Pradesh, the UP government has implemented a new tourism policy and declared Chambal Sanctuary as a dolphin sanctuary area.
Note: According to a report in The Statesman, unprecedented efforts to clean and purify the Ganga under the Namami Gange Mission have led to an increase in the dolphin population in the river.

  • Recently Airbus Helicopters and Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to finance the purchase of Airbus helicopters in India.
  • Under the MoU, both Airbus Helicopters and SIDBI will identify potential civil helicopter operators in India who are interested in financing solutions to purchase helicopters.
Airbus will provide technical and helicopter industry knowledge to SIDBI, which will evaluate these possibilities and finance them exclusively for Airbus.
