The Agneepath/Agnipath Scheme, introduced by the central government, involves recruiting young candidates as Agniveers for a four-year tenure in the Indian Armed Forces. What is an Agniveer?

Young cadets aspiring to join the Indian Armed Forces can apply through the Agneepath Scheme, which targets individuals between 17 and a half and 21 years of age. Successful candidates under this program are referred to as "AGNIVERS."

Agniveers, upon recruitment, serve for a period of four years, involving six months of training and a subsequent deployment of 3.5 years. Post their service tenure, they will have the option to reapply to continue their service in the armed forces.

Eligibility Criteria of the Agneepath Scheme

  • The age range for applicants must be between 17.5 and 21.
  • They must have earned a certification by a recognized board.
  • Must have earned at least 50 per cent of the possible points in 10+2.

Medical Standards of the Agneepath Scheme

Under their various categories, each candidate must meet specific medical eligibility requirements before joining the Indian Armed Forces. Agniveers with low medical categories will still be allowed to serve in the army as Agniveers.

Selection Process of The Agneepath Scheme

Training & Assessment of the Agniveers

Candidates will go through a proper training course, consisting various components -

  • The candidate will receive military training after recruitment, which will be depending on the demands of their organization.

What will an Agniveer do after 4 years?

The Indian government has committed to allocating 10% of positions in the defense and home ministries to "Agniveers." Other than this there would be other privileges provided to Agniveers after 4 years of their Service in Indian Armed Forces -

  • Rajnath Singh, the Union Defense Minister, announced that 10% of Indian Coast Guard employment would be reserved for Agniveerss. The 16 state-owned enterprises under the Ministry of Defence will adhere to these regulations.
  • Union Home Minister Amit Shah stated that 10% of available positions in the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) and Assam Rifles will be set aside for Agniveers.
  • The Civil Aviation Ministry has assured the recruitment of technically proficient Agniveers for various roles.
  • Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said the PSUs under his housing and petroleum ministries are working on hiring 'Agniveers' after their four-year service in the armed forces.
  • As per the recent announcement by the National Institute of Open Schooling, affiliated Agniveers will have the opportunity to undertake specialized courses to obtain their 10th and 12th-grade certifications.
  • The Union Ministry of Education will introduce a three-year specialized technical education program for agricultural workers at the undergraduate level.
  • Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar pledged preference in hiring for Agniveers
  • After serving their term year, soldiers who are dismissed will receive assistance in locating civilian employment. According to reports, the government is also in discussions with businesses about the 'Agniveers' future employment choices after their term is up.
